Violent crime fell sharply across the largest U.S. cities in early 2026, extending a nationwide decline that began after the pandemic-era crime spike.

The declines show up across every major region, suggesting a systemic, nationwide trend.

Homicides dropped 17.7%.

Robberies fell 20.4%.

Rapes declined 7.2%.

Aggravated assaults decreased 4.8%.

No statistics provided by any part of any government in the USA are reliable, and should not be believed in any context.

Sowing further distrust in the government and institutions helps no one but the enemies of Western democracies.

[-] Rothe@piefed.social 15 points 6 days ago

The US is not a Western democracy anymore.

Blame those responsible for gutting the government and institutions, not those who recognize the damage done. This administration has done everything possible to destroy science, hide numbers, and replace objective fact with executive decree.

Someday we might again be able to trust those institutions, but it's going to take a really long time to fix.

Yep, not in the lifetime of any person currently living.

The US is the enemy of western democracies.

Sowing trust in a violent, repressive, fascist regime is a far worse idea.

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

No worries then because the Major Cities Chiefs Association collected and reported these and is not a part of the government.

[-] DiarrheaSommelier@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

Ah, no worries then. We all know that police departments in the USA are absolutely above reproach and are impossible to influence politically.

[-] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 3 points 6 days ago

Conservatives generally seek to make US cities look like crime ridden hell holes because they're run by Democrats.

Exactly - no USA stats are trustworthy in any context.
