Not OP but:

One of the big points of the franchise is that Scott is a loser. He's jobless and is leeching off his best friend by living at his place, he dates a high school girl because she likes showing him attention, then he ignores her and cheats on her with Ramona.

When the movie came out, people thought Scott was a cool geek fighting to get the girl... That wasn't the message at all. The comics go way more in-depth because the movie didn't have much time for it.

It's also implied that Ramona is kind of a loser too that runs away from her problems and waits for someone to fix them for her, hence making Scott deal with her "seven evil exes" instead of confronting them herself and making up with them.

I loved the film as a teen, having not read the comics. I absorbed that fucking movie without an ounce of critical self-reflection. Scott was a loser, but in a cool samurai sword way.

The film made me seek out the comics.

I instantly fell out of love with the movie. The comics recognise that Scott is a dropkick. It treats Ramona like a character. It has arcs for the cast that isn’t just “he learns to say I love you”.

The film is visually entertaining, but man it feels shallow by comparison.

Its less that the movies didnt have time for it, and moreso that the screenplay was written up when only half of the books were out. Bryan OMalley kinda gave them a rough bullet points and general trajectory, but basically everything after Todd (number 3) was made up.

The games and the animated series actually tie up these alternate stories with the subspace highway and alternate dimensions.
