Outside of America many countries have a strong sense of pride especially when something is overtly representing them and their culture.

As a Canadian if they made this game with hockey and toques I'd damn well expect the prime minister to applaud them when they won game of the year too.

I'm assuming you're 14, so I'll explain in simple terms: the game is a success, the game is French, the president of France is celebrating that the game of the year is French. In the process, he is trying to make himself look good.
