I would argue that a 4473 and a NICS check is plenty of due diligence (which you would still have to do for suppressors and guns regardless of their NFA status).

I would agree. I just know I’ve seen several people on this website, as well as hearing it at local gun ranges, call for the abolishment of any sort of checks and balances.

It’s an issue with no simple answer and will require give and take from both sides. Neither side really wants to listen to the other when it comes to gun violence but that’s a whole different issue.

I mean in Europe silencers are over the counter items…

And how about the firearms you attach them to?

I mean, Switzerland (depending on the canton) has a licensure system where as long as you have the correct license, you can buy what you want without extra background checks.

I would actually prefer a system sort of like that, except it's like 2 tiers: semiauto and full auto. No license required for manually operated guns.

You know getting the “correct license” would include far more scrutiny than we currently face, right…?

Not really. It's kind of like getting a CCW license. You submit forms to the state police, maybe take a class or test.

There is other stuff like requiring a "purpose" for ownership (collecting, sport shooting, hunting, etc.), and depending on what you have and where there may be storage requirements. If it were up to me I wouldn't include that, because frankly I think they're stupid, but I would still take that stuff over a 4473, NFA paperwork, transfer fees, and all that other bullshit.

Already a controlled item in the US….

And what’s that got to do with the price of .223 in America? You bring up silencers being readily available in a country that has harsher gun laws than we do. Try to pick a better argument.

How does silencers being removed from the NFA change the price of .223? And it is a perfect example because even these countries that hate firearms recognize that silencers are not a dangerous item but are in fact PPE and a courteous thing to use when shooting.
