Not really. It's kind of like getting a CCW license. You submit forms to the state police, maybe take a class or test.
There is other stuff like requiring a "purpose" for ownership (collecting, sport shooting, hunting, etc.), and depending on what you have and where there may be storage requirements. If it were up to me I wouldn't include that, because frankly I think they're stupid, but I would still take that stuff over a 4473, NFA paperwork, transfer fees, and all that other bullshit.
