Does no one know how to make a roux? If you already had the cheese, I'm sure you had maybe some butter or oil on hand and some flour.
Butter or oil sure. You might be surprised how many people do not keep flour handy.
Last time we bought flour we had moths coming out of it like a year later
you need to make more sauce!
Also you need glass/metal/plastic containers

Flour and butter are certainly cheaper than mayo
People know how to make one. The real difference here is caring to make one. It adds a noticeable amount of time and effort. In many cases, if the dish isn't outright offensive and you can just shovel it down, then the end goal is achieved.
