Aren't Chinese names always, like, five puns in a trenchcoat? Or is that only PRC, not Taiwan?

[-] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago

Best I can say are Japanese names are just things

I really don't know much myself. I think the brand Huawei both means Chinese progress and red lotus? So their logo is a flower but their name is also a salute to China?

And then apparently a bunch of fandom stuff but I can't remember any of it.

Cantonese is spoken in Canton province and Hong Kong, not Taiwan, i think Taiwan speaks mandarin

They speak Mandarin and a Taiwanese dialect that's just different enough from Mandarin to be infuriating.

But also, even Mandarin isn't entirely one language. There's a ton of variation across the provinces. Beijing and Shanghai have their own dialects, for instance.

Yeah AFAIK Mandarin is official in Taiwan but a few others (chiefly Hokkien) are common.

I see, I don't live anywhere near the area nor speak any Chinese languages, so it's good to ve corrected

If you know Chinese Mandarin, you would have a tough time understanding Taiwanese Mandarin.
