The best explanation I've heard about it is that in order for 2 numbers to be different, there must be a third number that is larger than the smaller number, but smaller than the bigger number. In other words, there must be at least 1 number that is in between the two numbers. Because there is no number that is between 99.999... and 100, that must imply that they are the same number
