That's right I upvote every post I can! Its nice to be here and I hope this place keeps growing like it is and takes the place of reddit. Have a great day!

There's really no reason to downvote in the kind of environment that Lemmy has created! Everyone is respectful and kind and every post is so wholesome!

[-] lp0101@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Mostly agreed.

Except for tankies. I see them, I downvote, I move on 😎

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 5 points 1 year ago

Based answer. Tankies aren't welcome.

Voting is used differently here than it is on Reddit. Here we have no useless karma reputation collecting. So voting serves the sole purpose of sorting posts/comments by relevance. I used the downvote on Reddit very rarely but used to upvote frequently what i liked. Here, i would vote less but use downvotes more.
Upvoted your comment because of the information that followed-up. 🙂

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 1 points 1 year ago

On reddit I don't downvote users unless someone is purposely saying something hateful, but I downvote all the ads. It doesn't do much, but it does something and is a little cathartic.

[-] Caboose12000@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I actually disagree. I think downvotes are very useful for when someone posts the wrong kind of content to a niche community without it necessarily breaking the rules. a good example would be reddit's r/bonehurtingjuice. a core element of a bhj is that the comic is unedited except for the text, so if someone posts a comic with an edited last panel that shows an extra character, it would make sense to downvote that post to indicate that it doesn't fit the sub well, even if the resulting comic was still funny/good.

idk maybe that's toxic, but I think it's a better solution than outright deleting content like that when the content might still have value

[-] stallmer@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

I think the solution is to report the post if it violates rules of the community. Reporting doesn't always mean it's racist, homophobic, etc. I haven't reported any posts on Lemmy (no need to yet), but on Reddit you could choose why you were reporting the post.

You can also just be more proactive in upviting the posts that you like. That will still bury bad posts.

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

hmmm thats an interesting dilemma, no upvotes means no way for users to bury "bad" content. But downvoting definitely contributes to "toxicity". its gonna be cool to see how this all plays out. i wonder because when youtube got rid of thumbs down i was upset, but part of me is happy there is no downvoting here. i think the difference is this place is "small" and so i feel a need to work with people to have an outcome we both like because its in both of our best interest. where as on a platform with millions of users you almost don't care what individuals think because there's tens of hundreds of thousands of more people that are gonna come along and my lizard brain just wants to be accepted by the masses. i mean it makes sense, we as humans havent had to deal with the opinion of millions until now, 100 years ago we'd all be worried about what Jeffery nextdoor thought of us or whatever.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 3 points 1 year ago

I think this all just goes to show that there is no "hivemind" here. Nobody is getting mass downvoted, but because it's a small community, the rule of 1% doesn't apply and there's therefore no bad content to be buried.

[-] ghostmonster@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Totally feel this way also.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 1 points 1 year ago

That is the case in reddit, but here people tend to stick to the topic of communities, and even if someone posts something that doesn't fit in, our communities are small and a little bit of off-topic posting doesn't hurt anyone.

[-] ImFresh3x@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

I don’t know. I’m getting kinda tired of the constant celebrity posts. Still upvote because I want people to keep being here but wtf. There’s enough celebrities being pushed into our lives I feel.

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

for real. this feels so organic. i just had a chat in beehaws music community about classic rock and the beatles and rolling stones. feels good.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 0 points 1 year ago

Which communities do you visit the most?

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

hmmm honestly i'm still figuring this out i've only been here maybe 36 hours. it would take me a while to go to each community and find their names. i use this https://browse.feddit.de/ and just search for the names of reddit communities i like. fuckcars , gardening, music, camping, mildyinfuriating, gaming, futurama, jokes and humour, doityourself, memes, patientgamers thats a few i searched and found there.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 2 points 1 year ago

Oh nice! I'm in the wizardposting community, some freedom of information communities, fuckcars, programmerhumour, the general chat one, and a couple of others.

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

nice! i feel like i did when i found reddit forever ago. obviously different having come from reddit to here, but ya know what i mean. it feels like this place is run by us the users and not daddy reddit.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 0 points 1 year ago

Also, the small communities are nice, I feel like that definitely adds to the feeling of the place being run by us. Reddit also has a habit of being cynical and uncaring, as well as having the whole "hivemind" phenomenon, whereas this feels like a cozy and wholesome corner of the internet.

[-] bruhduh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That is the plus of the fediverse as a whole, even framatube feels like YouTube when it just started, people just posting their hobbies and being wholesome to eachother

[-] Variden3301@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It feels homey. Like everybody is a close friend here

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 2 points 1 year ago

I hope this doesn't go away if lemmy explodes in popularity, it's definitely one of my favorite parts of the platform.

[-] tox_solid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I know, it's exhausting. My thumbs are working overtime upvoting.

[-] GuyDudeman@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hahaha... I'm really glad that so many instances are blocking LemmyGrad.ml because those guys are major-league assholes. :)

*edit: For those of you who don't know what LemmyGrad is - it's tankies (they hate being called that, but that's the term for them)... hard-line communists who belittle anyone who isn't cool with mass-murder.

[-] carbon_based@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

tankies (they hate being called that

They literally have a tank in their logo! I always love some irony.

[-] GuyDudeman@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

The funny thing is - they pretend to "own" it... but they don't. They're VERY sensitive about being called tankies.

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

drop the dirt lol whats going on over there?

[-] airportline@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It used to be called communism.lemmy.ml and it was ran by the lemmy devs. It exploded in popularity after r/genzedong was banned.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 2 points 1 year ago

Because it's blocked we can't go over and see what's up lol

[-] cyberdecker@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Blocked is not quite the right word here. Nobody has blocked them. Nothing is stopping you from going over there to see the content they have. You can visit that instance directly and sign up on that instance if you like.

What is better to say is that they may not be federated with the Lemmy instance you connect to. This just means that your instance does not aggregate things from there and will not show the posts from that server in your feeds.

Right now the site is 404'ing, but this is not because of federation or blocking. Their site is just down for some reason.

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

oooo is this the new subbreddit drama?

[-] B4tid0@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Hohoho wouldn't that be grand a /c/sublemmydrama With The tea.

[-] GuyDudeman@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

There's already a "Community Drama" community on at least one of the instances. Go to Communities and click "All" and then do a search for drama and see what comes up.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 0 points 1 year ago

I don't know, but I tried to access it and got an error 404. We can't find out why it was blocked because it was blocked.

[-] steakfries@lemmy.one 0 points 1 year ago

looks like we're in a pickle then. i'm sure something will come out eventually.

[-] egg360@vlemmy.net 0 points 1 year ago

I just hope someone will tell us what's up. The page didn't load, but the tab image has some soviet iconography, that coupled with the name is giving me an idea as to what's up.

[-] carbon_based@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

https://join-lemmy.org/instances -- not for joining, just for the logo to see. I mean ... what has Marxism the philosophy to do with tanks? How dishonest can one be with their beliefs?

[-] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hard communist rhetoric and shitty people apologists I think.

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Is LemmyGrad supposed to be some reference to Leningrad?

[-] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Pretty sure ya
