I honestly don’t get this point of view.

Then we have to assume the government are happy for the real killer to go free. Then what happens when he kills another CEO and says to you got the wrong man.

Call a copycat for the first part, call a liar (and any proof fake) for the second. Helps that the US federal government rejects the concept of "fact" anyway.

It could lead to some uproar, but maybe that's a risk they're willing to take, or simply ignore.
