The bear was basically worshiped as an embodiment of strength, saying that he's not the strongest tarnished his image.
Idk, if you dig a little deeper you will also read that the evidence of them being hunted on purpose isn't conclusive. Also the tiger ends up losing often.

That's interesting! I associate the term with religiosity, but I'm not sure if that's just me or something I was specifically told growing up.

My research tells me a bear would have the upper hand against a lion, but not against a tiger... unless it was a polar bear

Tigers hunt bears. The only bears tigers don’t hunt are polar bears. It’s not deep research.
