Summary

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, after he suggested her "Know Your Rights with ICE" webinar could be illegal.

The event informed immigrants about their rights during ICE raids. Homan claimed the webinar might impede immigration enforcement and said he was working with the DOJ to determine legal action.

AOC dismissed his remarks, stating, "Maybe he can learn to read. The Constitution would be a good place to start."

She continues to oppose Trump’s immigration policies, including efforts to revoke birthright citizenship.

"on her X social media account" "hosted on her Facebook page."

This person is part of the establishment.

[-] DrDeadCrash@programming.dev 19 points 2 months ago

I've seen her on Tic Tok too, she's going to where the people are.

[-] index@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Yes she's going where the votes are, that's what politicians do.

Good? People voting for things they want? did you just describe democracy?

[-] DrDeadCrash@programming.dev 5 points 2 months ago

So your comment could be reduced to "politician is politician", nice.

[-] LMurch@thelemmy.club 3 points 2 months ago

Right? Politicians participating in politics?? Say it ain't so!

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 13 points 2 months ago

I'm not saying you're wrong, but for instance If all my local justice and climate groups moved to masto they would effectively cease to exist.

Would love it if people with the capability would post to both, though.

[-] OpenPassageways@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

It's possible that you're right. It's also possible that people would follow those groups to Mastodon.

It's very possible that people would follow AOC to Mastodon as well. There's no reason she can't post on Mastodon as well and see how it goes.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Is it possible, yes. Is it likely? Eeehhh...

[-] index@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Every serious group already moved to mastodon and we are talking on lemmy. She has million of followers already and isn't even trying, she's part of the establishment.

Social media contributes to the polarization of public discourse and should absolutely be boycotted. However, this polarization manifests in various ways, and your comment is a good example of this. When everything becomes a purity test, we fall into extremism. To counter the rise of fascism, you must be willing to unite with those who do not share your opinions.

you must be willing to unite with those who do not share your opinions.

To counter the rise of fascism you don't use the private social media of a guy who does the nazi salute in public.

[-] Teknevra 5 points 2 months ago

Not defending her, but she is also on Bluesky

[-] index@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

So they are not even on mastodon?

[-] Teknevra 1 points 2 months ago

Apparently not

[-] tooting_lemmy@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

It was on BlueSky.
