The bowden tube between the extruder and hotend somehow got unscrewed, and the extruder just kept unspooling filament around the room, as the printer kept happily going on.

Nice.
If you're gonna respool it, try not to put too many knots in there and maybe wipe it clean with IPA and a microfiber or something.

Thanks, I just loosened the extruder idler (?) to roll it back up and restarted the print. Didn't think of cleaning the filament first, but anything touching the floor has gone through the hotend now.
