I think I’ve just assumed she was gay for the last five years or so.

I imagine that's probably one of the most desired reactions to coming out, no?
Apparently, that's how it was with my great-uncle (close to my parents' age) in the eighties. He says my grandma was an asshole because she asked him if he just found out because everyone else had been known.
