We will be down for approximately an hour as we migrate the database server and address the current performance issues exacerbated by the concurrent twitter outage and reddit migration.

This will also impact blahaj.zone

I really really don't want any more posts from 'yiffit' coming across my feed. No hate to furries but I really don't wanna see sexual furry content.

Blahaj Lemmy Logo Blahaj Zone Logo Blahaj

I can see this taking up a lot of time! The interface for managing them isn't exactly snappy, but, it's more than we had before! :)

Do votes and comments not always federate with other instances? When I view the same post in different instances i.e. this instance and lemmy.world, they number of votes and comments are different. Is this because of some instances we are blocking?

Example:

We will be adding some extra buffer to our hardware and upgrading the the 0.18.1 release candidate in order to prepare for the possible membership surge.

SOLVED: Our subreddit had a longass name, and Lemmy has a 20 character limit

Hi! Reddit mod from a large-ish but well-known subreddit looking to move things to the Lemmy-verse but for some reason my and my co-mod have had absolutely zero luck for the last 4 days creating a community on any Lemmy server. Whenever we try to create one, we just get the little spinny button of death and it's never created.

Yes, even here on Blahaj.

Are we cursed?

We managed to create a magazine on Kbin (still glitchy but it's the only one that worked) but we're worried that if we don't snag that exact name on Lemmy, someone else will pounce on the name and grab it for clout, which would be very distressing because we've worked our asses off trying to grow that community.

What are we doing wrong? Are our usernames not cute enough? Did someone snag the name and is hiding it from us?

Help, we are not good with computers.

About a week and a half back, Jerboa on the Play Store received an update that added 0.18 support and started displaying a similar message whenever you logged in, but didn't actually block using the app or posting, but certain features were not working correctly.

As of the update yesterday, Jerboa crashes unceremoniously if you happen to be previously logged in on lemmy.blahaj.zone, and prevents fresh login with the message above.

I'm a bit worried about how the Jerboa devs are handling updates ☹️

Tomorrow, reddit will be shutting off 3rd party app access. If the twitter migration is anything to go by, that means that the wave of new users coming in the next few weeks will be much bigger than the wave we saw earlier this month.

Our lead techy admin @supakaity@lemmy.blahaj.zone is also recovering from broken bones and surgery, so she will be slower to respond to issues :)

All of that being said, we're as prepared as we can be. We're currently running our instance on hardware with excess capacity to spare, but who knows if it will be enough.

So, good luck to all of us, and see you on the other side :)

Login Probs (self.main)

I saw the thread about difficulty signing in on Firefox. Now I can't sign in on Chrome. I cleared the cookies for all lemmy stuff. No help.

I'm here on Liftoff, but no love on the web ☹️

When possible, I think the server needs to be updated to be supported by Jerboa

Not sure though

Signin issues (self.main)

I haven’t been able to sign in on Firefox desktop ever since the new upgrade/migration. I’ve tried disabling extensions but that hasn’t worked either. I’m on version 114.0.2 of firefox

EDIT: Resetting my password seems to have fixed the issue

Hi, I'm u/MayaFey_ from reddit, I am on the mod team of /r/badwomensanatomy.

We were part of the failed protest, and frankly we're done with spez. We're leaving. We have a poll on our subreddit to choose between lemmy, discord, and raddle, and lemmy is winning by a large margin so far.

So if lemmy wins, the question will present itself... which instance will we move to? As a mod team, we'd prefer an instance with open registration to lower friction for our reddit members making the transition. And we're also looking for a place that is not accepting of misogyny or violence against women. This is me sending out feelers to figure out which instances would be a best fit and most accepting of our community.

Some details about us:

Badwomensanatomy is a community about... bad women's anatomy. Users will reproduce images they found elsewhere (like, a snip of a facebook post, or something from a poorly drawn manga, for example) that state incorrect ideas about anatomy or incorrect depictions of anatomy. Sometimes these posts can be NSFW, or misogynistic, but the idea behind the community is we call these things out and discuss the ways they are ill-conceived and what the correct anatomy is.

Our sub is very pro-queer and pro-trans, and not tolerant of terfs at all. Though it doesn't specifically relate to queerness or transness, so I'm not sure how good of a fit it will be.

So far, about 40 users have responded to our poll and it's been 5 hours. Our sub has over 500k subs, but being realistic, only a few dozen or a hundred at most will make the jump. That said, that's still a lot of users given how small lemmy is at this time.

If you're receptive to this migration, and the poll confirms the community's choice to go to lemmy, we can create a community here and start migrating. As a representative of the mod team, I am willing to chip in to the running costs of this instance to compensate for the increase burden.

Let me know what you think.

Apps? (self.main)
submitted 2 years ago by JenGeorge to c/main

I'm new to Lemmy. I've been on Mastodon for a while. I tend to access social media on the web and by app. I use Fedilab for Mastodon and I am comfortable with it.

What apps should I consider for Lemmy? I'm android, btw.

Thanks!

I found a way to theme Lemmy, but it seems there's no theme settings on this instance. I tried using this as a theme but it doesn't seem to work, even when I add our instance into the code. Does anyone know how to get this working?

If I'm understanding correctly the hotly anticipated v0.18 is currently incompatible with the current version of Jerboa through the play store (not through FDroid). I think I also heard it breaks captcha? Was just wondering if there had been any discussion of when to update.

If you try to create an account and it does not work - no error message, no timeout, just starring at a spinning wheel forever -, look at your chosen username. If it is longer than 20 characters, try a shorter name.

After you have gotten through the process of account creation, you might think to yourself, yo, but I can totally choose a display name, right? If you go to your account settings and change your display name and find yourself again, without an error message or anything, starring at a spinning wheel forever - try a shorter display name.

I have been told that the standard for usernames is 3 to 20 characters, though this can vary from instance to instance. But Lemmy does not tell you that. Which can be very confusing.

Disclaimer: I post this as a "for your information", not a support request. I don't know if the admins of this instance would even be able to help here. This is a Lemmy problem, not a Blahaj problem.

Sign up issues? (kbin.social)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by RedMoon@kbin.social to c/main

Hi folks, I'm trying to sign up on your server over here but seem to be running into an issue where it stalls when I press the actual signup button, I just get the spinning wheel. I tried in both firefox and chrome and am getting the same issue. The network tab doesn't log any requests aside from a 304 for symbols.svg.

is anyone aware of this problem and/or of how to fix it?

edit: as soon as I disconnected from my VPN it worked. This is upsetting that I can't use a VPN on this community.

edit 2: now i can't log in, VPN or not. Same issue across firefox and chrome.

OK, so when I go to https://lemmy.blahaj.zone, it automatically goes to "Local" and not "Subscribed". Is there anyway to set it up so when I come to the website it automatically goes to "Subscribed"?

Hi, today I noticed that posts vanish after I read them. Like: I click on a post, reading it in a new window, then jumping back to my "timeline" - but it's not there anymore.

Is there a new option "hide when read" or sth like that? I am quite confused, I did not change my settings lately, but this behaviour is new to me. Help and / or an explanation would be appreciated!

I just noticed that my active and hot are 3 days old, it looks like this server is being hit with this bug where the hot calculator dies. Currently, there are fixes in the works and it may be worth cherry picking them or restarting the server during a down time until the fixes make it into the next release.
