I don’t have a lot of people to turn to, never really have.. I’ve been pretty isolated most of my life, so I’ve just sort of muddled through by reading a lot and trying to figure out how to deal with stuff on my own.

But I’m not really sure how to handle this. I’m disabled and have been most of my life, and I haven’t really let it stop me for the most part. It gets in the way, but I brute force my way through. Often to my own detriment.

I guess I’m not doing as well as I thought.. I’m applying for a disability upgrade, and one of the things I can submit is statements in support of my claim, letters from the people around me about how my disability impacts my life, and theirs. If this doesn’t sound like a normal disability process that’s because this is the VA service-connected disability process, rather than a normal one.

Anyway, I asked a couple of my closest friends to write something up about how they have seen the impacts, and it low-key hurt my soul to read. Reading how they have been negatively impacted by my limitations, and how they view what I go through has been the worst kind of eye opening.

And I’m not sure how to deal with that, or even where to look.

If you’ve got motherly or fatherly advice, if you’ve been through similar, if you’ve been through something else hard, please feel free to share. Anything helps.

Not really a political debate, btw, this is more of a cultural discussion thing.

So... my mom said to me that, when I was younger, that I "behaved" more, and it's only after we came to the US that I started to act more "rebellious"... so she's blaming the US Culture?!? What lmao?

Because she's saying Americans are more "rebellious" so it's therefore it has to be the culture here has apparantly "poisoned" my mind?

Lmao what?

So sad you don't hold your leash that tight like you envisioned, mom? 🤣

So... I'm just like...

(1) my parents made the decision to move, but now they're gonna blame an entire country they chose to move to???

(2) kids want more invidividuality as they grow older... like this is probably biology... but sure, "if I was in China I'd be 'behaving' more"... like teachers slapping your hand with a 1 meter ruler? that? or a walled-off internet and information access?

(3) the exact word is 聽話 which has multiple meanings, not sure which one is the intended use, but one of the definitions is: "obedient"... so.... 👀 I'm... not... being obedient... enough... ???

(4) my parents should be the last ones to talk about obedience/disobedience to me; my existence is literally the result of them being disobedient to the government policy and gave birth to me in spite of the One Child Policy (hell, many people did that too, I'm not alone being an "illegal" second child, so is Chinese society rebellious too?), so they talk about disobedience, my existence was precisely the result of an act of disobedience, maybe disobedience is my fated nature.

So... do you think Americans (or Westerners in general) are "too rebellious"? Were you "too rebellious" growing up? If you have children, do you think they are "too rebellious"? Should kids be being "more obedient"?

🤔

Its funnier when you're speaking a language that is a minority language in your region, like immigrant families for example

they're like, stop saying it.

Um...

so...

Nobody here speaks Cantonese or Taisahnese, y'all are the only ones that I speak it to, who the hell did I learn it from? 👀

Everyone have their own "hot takes" that either work as a valid opinion, or ragebait for drama. Personally, I have one that if I'm saying it to you all, maybe considered to be "too serious😈🤡". The hot takes itself is . . .

God Never forbid man to do their [hobbies/fun], (toxic) society did

How about yours? I like to hear alongside the reason why ;)

(Edit: I'm aware that some takes may kinda too far and too deep, so let's keep it casual)

Which now I thinking about it... I guess this is why Gen Z / Gen Alpha are using "brain rot" slang, they want to create a world where they feel in control, where they are the masters of.

Just like I do. I sometimes just yell English phrases as my like to create a sense of seriousness... like know how parents call your full name? My mom use Taishanese (their home village language) to call my full name instead of Cantonese (the language of the city I was born in) when she's mad at me, and I feel like that make her feel so "in control". So for me, I reverse it in the other direction, I just use English like "leave me alone" lol, I don't care if my mom understood it. I feel so empowered by it lol.

I feel so jealous.

Let's talk turkey. (lemmy.world)

And by that I mean let's argue about how to cook Thanksgiving food and what food is best. I'm a firm believer that canned green beans are better than fresh or frozen green beans in green bean casserole.

Have you been rocking an old classic? Discovering something new? Revisiting some nostalgic bands from the past?

If you've got links, post 'em up!

for context, I am coming from https://piefed.social/post/1500502 (fedimemes post saying people go to political stuff instead of casual stuff).

I for one had subscribed this comm pretty much when it was made (moving away from lemm.ee i think), but at the time this comm was not active, there were mostly regular posts by lady butterfly and blaze (for example - how has your week been), but they did not get much activity, and there were not 'regular' posts posts (not the periodic ones, for example, and i saw it just 5 mins ago, the post about drying your hair, these kind of posts were just not there). Hence I unsubbed. (for example, there were less than 5 posts a week back then)

Today I got directed here, and seeing it more active (i scrolled to end of first page, and week still not ended), it makes me happy.

edit: well maybe i spoke too soon. maybe my page had not loaded up correctly or what, but now when i scroll, i saw posts 2 months old. my point is still partially correct, number of posts made between 1 month ago and 2 months ago is still less than number of posts made in last 1 - 1.5 weeks, but it is not that high. number must go high

edit2: sorry, i forgot about BoozeOrWater. I did not realise they were making the how has your week been style posts. I am sorry. (i saw the 'It's Sunday, how are your pets doing?' post by blaze and guessed they are still making the periodic posts)
