Bro, therapy is so underrated. Growing up I was made to believe only crazy people needed it. But like, we are not perfect. And talking to someone who was able to call me out on my BS (in a good way) and show me my blindspots was such an eye opener. Would recommend.

I am speculating here, but I'd imagine people here are so used to right-leaning comments making insincere questions, poisoned questions, or "just asking" type questions, that they thought the same was happening here. I thought the same at first, and really, can you blame? But, in this case, it could just easily be an honest question by someone trying to learn, and maybe there is something to be said about the response it got. We need to welcome people trying to learn, and who ask genuine questions. That's the only way to grow (both the community and the ideology).

Edit: Honestly, what the other commenter said.

I just suggest not conflating the two in the future.

Ye, I'll try. It was an honest mistake.

I think if anything communicating a passionate disdain for people like Beehaw's lying admins [...] would be a positive for new user interest.

I'd have to read more about the history between Beehaw's admin and this Lemmy instance. I won't blindly passionately disdain them, but clearly there is some history here which I'm not aware of, so if anything, I'll think twice before "both-siding" this.

(along with Democrats, Republicans, Blairites, etc)

We're on the same page here. ;)

Honestly it all depends on how paranoid you want to be. Say for example you had a rough breakup and want to get away from your significant other. For that person, maybe mentioning a city is enough to know where you will likely be? (Assuming they know it's you using the nickname and location of family relatives, for example).

For a server host, like a Lemmy instance, if you don't use a VPN, they could already have a general idea of where you live (if they wanted), even without you telling them. That's because they can see the IP from all connections (if they wanted).

For a random person like me, on the other side of the world, I'd probably need a bit more than just the city.

I'll leave what is a significant risk up to you. Just know that it depends on a case by case basis, who you're hiding the information from, and how intent your opponents are in wanting to obtain that information. So, if there is little reward for the trouble, they probably won't even try.

All of these things are generally called opsec (operational security), if you're interested in researching more.

Nope, ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น. Did "xD" originate from ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ? I kinda just saw it somewhere and started using it. :)

Why not both? xD

You're right, we are human. And as another commenter said, this is freechat. We should be able to express ourselves and to have a safe space to do that. I'm new here, so still learning. I'm really liking how passionate people are. :)

I don't mean "playing the game by their conditions". More like "kill them with kindness". Their instance still has members whose opinions can be swayed, and if they learn this instance is banned, visit, and encounter hateful posts, justified as they may be, they may not stay very long. Though I do understand your frustration.

I have to say, knowing we are humans talking to each other and not bots astro turfing everything, feels nice. Hopefully it lasts.

And random replies! Discussions are what makes a social media, social. :)
