Thanks for your reply it really helps the video's you linked I already found. and found that they where really helpful for understanding. Together with your experience I am probably going to experiment a little to(I like to make my own stuff to so not looking nice is less of a concern as long as it works). Thanks for explaining the few details I didn't understand. I feel like they are a perfect tool for presence detection that together with something else are exactly what I need. Once again thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge

Interference never though about that good to know might go 60ghz then and get 3 for 180 degree coverage. Also they can look through walls? Also trough wood or concrete or only the american paper walls? As this would be amazing for my hallway where there is a staircase kind of in the way.

Also what do you mean by fast detection are the radars not enough for someone walking by?

So I am looking to get precense detection in my living room. I think I want mmwave as I do want to detect people that are sitting on the couch for example. And I saw most don't have a large distance and angle as my living room/kitchen is 8m by 12m(in an L shape) so most with a 4-6m detection distance are not enough. Also regarding the price I am looking at esphome with a hi-link sensor. But I would like to get some recommendations if I should get a LD2420 or LD2410. Some say the 2420 can't detect a stationary target but the 2410 has less range(6m vs 8m). So I thought place 2 LD2420's for 120 degree 8m coverage in the corner of the L with a esp8266. Would this work for stationary targets? (it doesn't have to be able to differentiate between the two just not be like a infrared motion sensor). Also if you have done this and have found problems or something to share please do so. Thanks for your sharing experience with one or both of the sensors and your knowledge about this topic.

that doesnt seem to work i can only forget the network and see the encryption type

[-] plotting_homelab@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

i forgot to mention i want to do it when i am not connected to them they are not mine but logins from family and friends that i want to all do without having to go to their house with both phones. if qr-codes work without being connected to them tell me how and i am happy to do it but i could not find the option except for the network i am connected to at that moment

So i have since a few months a new phone the honor magic 5 pro and have some things i am looking for and hope you guys might be able to help me solve the problems i have i will list them from most likely you can solve them to least likely.

  1. i have loads of saved wifi passwords/names on my old huawei p20 pro that i want to migrate to my new phone how do i do that (i currently don't have root on both phone's but am willing to get it if it doesn't void my warranty on the new phone and doesn't require me to do a new system install/wipe my phone and doesn't cost a crap ton of money (time is no issue))(edit i dont have acces to the wifi networks so qrcode sharing wont really work)
  2. how do i optimize my battery usage regarding refresh rate and resolution? put it on low or smart? (both 60hz and low res is more than enough for me) also i have a app (track work time) that checks my location often can i maybe limit its frequency in settings?
  3. how do i teach the power management system to without me disabling it (putting it off auto) in the settings not kill my mail apps and some other apps?
  4. where is my wifi scanning frequency toggle in developers settings on my old phone it only ran a wifi scan every 30 seconds or so but in dev settings there was a disable rate limit switch.
  5. do you know somewhere in the Netherlands that has public wifi 7 so i can test if it works on my phone?
  6. how do i map my volume up and down buttons in the camera to something like manual focus or zoom?
  7. in my camera app where is my megapixel setting or is there non and just high res or normal?
  8. can i in software (again i dont have root see question 1) control my charging speed to limit it to something like 500ma instead of the max a charger can supply?
  9. is there a way to get an lower brightness than the minimum on the slider? or will my display look just always display white at max brightness(or what feels like it when its dark around me)?
  10. is there a way to get my 960fps 720p slowmo back from my 5 year old huawei p20 pro on my honor magic 5 pro?

Thanks for your help solving this issues for me or letting me know if it can not be done.

Okey I see everyone telling me power will be 100w+ so I think I won't do it as we pay around the 30-50 cents per kWh but I see why purpose made hardware is more expensive now

13

So with Crypto mining being less profitable and miners selling their rigs for cheap I thought how can I get my self a cheap managed network switch. I saw mining motherboards with 12 PCIe 2.0 1x slots(4gbit bandwidth) and tought hey if I plug in some cheap 10g 2port network adapters I can make my own network switch with exactly the ports I need(SFP+ rj45). Put opensence on it and boom Managed network switch with multigig(2gbit per port). Is there something I am missing or have I found a way to get cheap multigig? Also can anyone who has a 10g only network switch tell me what kind of power it is using per port so I can compare? Thanks for debunking my idea and saving me a few bucks.

Oh so they are gambling that nobody returns it. This explains a lot thanks

[-] plotting_homelab@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I have done that already every week I make a backup because I don't thrust it. But it won't show errors so the shop I bought it from won't accept it as a return

So I own a Lenovo legion 5i laptop and I installed a brand new mushkin Vortex 2tb NVME SSD last year. But it has gone into read only about 30 times since I got it but smart reports 0 errors. I reboot my machine and boom fixed it it takes place in windows and in Linux often in the middle of my work so I can't save again. I did like to fix this issue but don't know what to do as there are no errors.

The drive is gpt and has multiple partitions of which my NTFS partition has the most problems as it sometimes requires a reboot of windows even when it worked before in Linux. But my swap and ext4 partitions also fail. In total there are 6 partitions 1 large NTFS partition, 2 large ext4, a swap partition and a bios and fat partition for tripple boot. My OS's are up to date and are windows 11, pop_os and Gentoo. My other samsung drive never has this issue. But my laptop has had a motherboard replacement and a ram replacement since I got it last year.

I hope you can guide me in the right direction. Thank you for at least reading this.

https://batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-808-how-to-prolong-lithium-based-batteries has a table explaining exactly what I wanted to know 10% discharge depth results in a larger total charge the battery can carry throughout its live than a 80% for example

[-] plotting_homelab@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I wish it was as easy as just buy $50 battery. But with a waterproof phone I don't think waterproofing will be ip68 when I replace the battery and being able to just dunk my phone in water or run it under the sink when it's Dirty is so freaking easy. I do find it kinda weird that you doing 80-20 made the battery worse I think it might be just newer battery tech/software but you saying that your new phone also has the battery degrade faster than your previous phone makes me wonder if maybe manufacturers are already doing 80-20 in the software maybe and mapping 80 to 100 and 20 to 0. And that charging it more often is worse than just doing 100% and charging it less. I think I am definitely going to need to setup some experiment to figure it out. And maybe going to ask honor for advice. Thank you for sharing this information.

So I recently bought a new honor magic 5 pro. My last phone the Huawei p20 pro was around 5 years old and started to show significantly less battery life. So I want to use this phone again for 5 years. But now I wonder should I keep the battery around 50% (65-35) and charge twice as often or should I 80-20 and charge once every two days? Is there any science that proves one is better than the other? Thank you for your information and sources.

So i am building a 3d printer enclosure that is a 1.2m(4ft) square box. The outside is made out of hardboard with 8 toggle latches to close/open 2 sides but i don't really like the brown look the hardboard has so i am looking to make it nicer. So i would like some ideas to make it less brown and plain and more modern/futuristic. All ideas are welcome image, drawing or just in text form i need some inspiration. Thanks for all your ideas.

10

so i bought my first case+pcb+keycaps only needing some nice switches i have a switch tester and decided i want to go with some nice red/linear switches. As i am on a budget i am looking at some kailh and gateron and OUTEMU switches.

I noticed that kailh has box switches that they claim are dust proof/resistant and OUTEMU has water/dustproof ip56 switches. I cant find gaterons dust/water resistant switches. Now my question is: does this matter? like are normal switches likely to fail due to dust and is going with water proof switches going to mean i can spill my drinks on my keyboard? If not is there some gasket or so that does make this last thing possible?

Thanks for making this clear to me.

So i am in the middle of starting my own company in computer support(focusing on teaching people how to use email, printer etc and solving problems that might be standing in their way). But i need a name, website, Email and phone number. The last one i have figured out as that is just a if it is kind of easy to remember its okay. But figuring out an E-mail and website requires a name for the company.

I have heard some people that named company’s with their name in it and regret it later. So how would one properly name a company? I am based in the EU if it matters but i don’t think this is something that is different in different cultures.

Things i currently think about are (my name) tech service and (my location(city)) tech service but i don't know if that is a good idea and if i might get regrets in the future(for example when expanding to more locations or getting employees).

Thanks for your vision on this.

Arch Linux ISO

are you an arch user by any chance?

[-] plotting_homelab@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Ama

I am wondering is there any way i can add my own iso's to a medicat drive? like is it just like the ventoy installer and can i than just use it as a preinstalled ventoy drive to put my own live iso/windows install media on it? or is it 1 drive only for medicat?

(btw i disabled my add blocker when reading your message about the only way to keep the site running i like this kind of hey i noticed you are running an add blocker kind of message and just wanted to support with adds)

Edit i found a typo on your site: https://medicatusb.com/docs/installation/supported-drives/ "We SRONGLY suggest" i think you meant STRONGLY

[-] plotting_homelab@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

DBan

this is exactly why i posted this. I learned some new tool :)

hello guys i am wondering what are some must have iso's for a ventoy drive? and what size ventoy drive would you recomend (i am considering buying a 512gb, 1tb or 2tb tranced 220s nvme)

Back story: So i recently started my own "business" in computer support and i need a drive to put ventoy on (its currently on a 32gb micro sd card) so i can easily have memtest, ultimatebootcd and some linux distro's/windows install media and i am wondering if there would be any reason not to go with the cheapest per gb drive(2tb) as i could then also use it for some nice snappy file transfers. I am also looking to compile a list of iso's to put on it. As i mentioned before i already have a few things but you guys probably have more suggestions for iso's to put on a drive for repair\troubleshooting.

Thanks in advance for your advice on drive size and ISO recommendations.

so i am looking to get me a gpu in my "beast"(a 24core 128gb tower with to much pci-e) i thought i might buy a used 3090 but then it hit me most applications can work with multiple gpu's so i decided i was going to go with €600 to ebay and using techpowerup i figured out there performance by looking at the memory bandwidth and fp32 performance. So this brought me to the following cards for my own LLaMa, stable-difusion and Blender: 5 Tesla K80's, 3 Tesla P40's or 2 3060's but i cant figure out what would be better for performance and future proofing. the main difference i found is in cuda version but i cant really figure out why that matters. the other thing i found is that 5 k80's are way more power intensive than 3 p40's and that if memory size is really important the p40's are the way to go but then i couldn't figure out real performance numbers as i cant find benchmarks like this one for blender.

So if anyone has a nice source for stable-diffusion and LaMA benchmarks i would appreciate it if you could share it. And if you have one of these cards or multiple and can tel me which option is better i would appreciate it if you shared your opinion
