The sort of error that only occurs when it might become bad PR.

The people leaving Twitter right now want Twitter minus Elon. That's Bluesky. They've heard a couple of their Twitter follows mention it and they've gone to their app store where they find an app called Bluesky, install it and easily join and start using it. Once they do they are finding it pretty straightforward to find people they used to follow on Twitter.

That's all people want.

I'm approaching my sixties now. I've been through a lot of the messes of recent history. The world today (and it is the world, its not just the US although that is the most flagrant example) feels genuinely different. Just the sheer amount of misinformed hate and self-destructive uber capitalism feels like its reaching a crescendo. What comes after that is worrying to think about.

Bad idea. Last time someone did this we ended up with this timeline.

Global Order of Satan became aware today that the Daily Star newspaper have run a front page story in which ex-Boyzone member Shane Lynch claims Taylor Swift is a Satanist.

We have a long-standing policy of not confirming or denying rumours about our membership but we'd suggest that Mr Lynch Needs To Calm Down and stop creating Bad Blood. Even if she weren't our Anti-Hero, we'd still think she needs to Shake Him Off because We Knew He Was Trouble.

As stated, we don't usually comment on membership applications, but We Wish You Would.

Wants: high rate of child death via guns, incest babies, rape babies, women victimised for life, teens bullied to death

Does not want: people with their own lives or opinions that affect no one else on the planet.

A couple of weeks ago there was a post on how to identify bands that are dodgy or straight up awful people. Here's a few links to help with that.

  1. The Is it fash: the musical Facebook Group. Yeah, it's FB which isn't great but this is an active group of over 5k people, some of whom work with musicians and labels, who can provide accurate info. You need to request access.

  2. Do You Hear The People Scream One Drive document. This is a list which is mostly up to date in a OneDrive Word doc of bands considered explicitly anti-fascist

  3. Black Metal Bands And Their Politics | Bypass IP restriction. A list of rated Black Metal bands with the categories; Fascist, Sketchy, Not Very Sketchy, Not Sketchy, Leftist/Anti-fascist

  4. Black Metal Bands To Avoid And Their Politics | Bypass IP restriction. Similar to the above, but better sourced.

  5. Antifascist Black Metal YouTube Channel | On Piped | On Invidious. A channel that promotes and features explicitly anti-fascist, non problematic black metal (and other genres)

You may recall that in November last year we were delighted to announce the induction of our newest Order formed of members from the Pittsburgh area, USA. After a hectic few months of dedicated hard work by them, they've now announced their official web presence and social media accounts. They have also grown quite a lot too (currently approaching 100 members) and have begun accepting Order members from other locations in the US on the East and West Coast areas until such times Orders become established there too. They have even found time in amongst all this organising to initiate a number of philanthropic initiatives such as their Baphy Bags campaign - preparing, filling and distributing practical resource bags to unhoused people in the Pittsburgh area.

If you'd like to know more about them, here are some links for you:

  1. Official website
  2. Their Discord
  3. On Mastodon
  4. On Facebook
  5. On Instagram
  6. On Twitter/X
  7. On YouTube

A shame. It reads (particularly at the top of that thread) like an ignorant Admin and a typical Hexbear user(s).

Please note when I say that that I am not suggesting or implying that the Admin was not in the wrong, but that when the Admin said:

It’s literally the opposite of transphobic. It’s like they tried as hard as they could to negate everything bad JKR has ever said…

That seems more like something someone ignorant of a lot of things would say and not necessarily what someone intent on being awful would say. The response to them, also from a Hexbear user, was:

You’re a transphobic clown that cares more about your Harry Potter treats than trans people. Stop pretending otherwise.

Maybe that's true and maybe it's not. Certainly in the remainder of that thread, the Admin falls pretty short of decent behaviour. However, I think if that first response to the Admin's response had not been so judgemental and had maybe seen it as ignorance rather than malice and level headedly gone on to explain why the Admin is wrong without the (i think we can all agree) standard Hexbear method of engagement, maybe (not definitely, but maybe) the outcome might have been an ally rather than a defederation.

I suspect that I'm going to get responses to that paragraph stating it's not a trans persons responsibility to educate others. I do see that and understand it as I am part of a minority group that has been marginalised, persecuted and wished out of existence for hundreds if not thousands of years. I understand exactly how annoying and exhausting it is to feel like you have to continually explain why it's OK you exist.

But I've also come to realise the difference between ignorance and wilful ignorance and that it's always worth making at least one try with someone. 99% of the time it gets you nowhere, but sometimes it gets you an ally.

I understand the defederation decision and it doesn't affect my choice to be on Blahaj at all. I guess my hope is that the two Admin's can talk it out and that refederation is an available option but that if that doesn't happen, the PD Admin at least learns how they behaved is transphobic and they change their ways.

There might be no benefit to you but the people who would be the direct targets of every hate group like LibsOfTikTok currently active on Threads probably feel a bit differently.

This is in no way a knee-jerk reaction to a hypothetical alarm. Meta have directly contributed to a genocide and allow hate groups to grow unchecked on Threads. It blows my mind that the fediverse - itself built as a series of alternatives to shitty companies doing shitty things - thinks the harm Meta will do is hypothetical and unproven.

The benefits to not federating are many, but the best one, in my opinion, is not exposing current fediverse users who will be targeted to those who will target them.

And the part you left out - just before the 'victim created an incident', the male called her a n-word - twice - , then pushed her hard.

Are you absolutely sure about this? They suspended access to, and later restored access to, 3 piracy related communities a few months ago because they weren't sure what their legal liability was. And being as instances are owned by individuals without access to teams of high priced legal teams, that seemed fair enough to me.

Also, .world servers are not in the US so why do you imagine any US law would be enforced there?

There's absolutely no mention of any of this on their Announcement community either.

[-] leraje 46 points 2 years ago

I believe they do, yes. It's done to out anti-trans people, making them easy to spot as they complain loudly about being forced to.

I'd like to thank you (@Ada) for keeping everyone in the loop and dealing with the (sole) legitimate issue that a hexbear user raised as promptly as was possible for you, given that everyone has to sleep and have a life.

Defedding is an unfortunate step, but in this case it felt inevitable. Yes they were very good on issues surrounding representation for all kinds of 'minority' groups and there seemed to be a few good apples amongst them but the majority of that instance see absolutely everything through the lens of totalitarianism so its possibly not a surprise that that totalitarianism ethos spilled over into their interactions in the wider fediverse. Totalitarianism forbids dissenting or different opinions, no matter how innocent or minor the opinion and that seemed to me to be the essence of hexbear. The fact that their shade of totalitarianism included respecting trans/queer/non-white/differently abled people is both a good thing and still not enough to justify the rest of their rigidity. I intrinsicly mistrust anyone who is so absolutely certain about every part of their mindset that they cannot brook any kind of differing view, no matter how minor the difference being expressed is. Online, that results in dog-piling, brigading and flooding other instances and all that happens then is users on the recipient instance get bored with dealing with it and stay away.
