we’re having some family over for dinner in a couple weeks and i’m having trouble trying to pull together a menu… would love some suggestions!

out of four people, one person is a vegetarian who will eat anything as long as it doesn’t have meat which is normally pretty easy to work around, but harder given that one of the folks is a very picky eater. from what i can tell, he generally doesn’t eat most fish or most pork, doesn’t eat a ton of vegetables, doesn’t like sharp cheeses, prefers food bland, dislikes most “exotic” spices. foods i’ve seen him enjoy are spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, and mashed potatoes and lightly salted chicken breast.

given all this, do folks have any suggestions? i’m having an especially hard time because i cook a lot of asian food and basically most asian spices are off the table. italian might be okay though. thanks!

i frequented r/menslib and it was actually fairly leftist and clear about the ways that traditional concepts of patriarchy often disadvantages men and encourages inclusivity and talking about mental health. it certainly takes more intentionality, but i think they do it pretty well.

i wonder what kind of tangible effect this will have overall, given how opaque and discretionary college admissions standards are in the first place. if an institution wanted to, couldn’t class-conscious policies geared towards underrepresented geographies and first generation college students achieve a similar outcome while skirting the ruling on race explicitly?

fish heads... they're just so much cheaper than the rest of the fish and delicious in the air fryer. also i'll eat the tails on shrimp.

my favorite thing is places that have a 20% gratuity automatically added to every bill to compensate employees fairly (i am begrudgingly accepting of this even though it should really just be on the menu price) but then have an extra line for tip on top of that. and sometimes that extra tip line calculates a tip for you based off of the already added 20% gratuity. insane.

i live in a sleepy little suburb and it is a truly lovely place to start a family. the local library is well funded (the building is one of the largest libraries in the state!), the public schools are good, there are lots of lovely parks and playgrounds, and every time i leave the house there are people taking pleasant strolls or walking their dogs.

hello internet pals! i am posting in the hopes that folks have some good lazy (but perhaps still somewhat healthy?) air fryer or microwave meal / snack recipes to share because i’ve fallen into a bit of a cooking rut lately and easy new recipes would definitely help inspire me.

korean egg rice: crack an egg into a bowl of rice and mix with sesame oil and soy sauce, microwave for 2 min, sprinkle some furikake on top if you’ve got it and you’ve got a solid comfort food in like 5 mins tops

poly bridge 3! very chill but still stimulating game where you get a variety of maps and scenarios to build bridges in. i did have to watch two hours of bridge building tutorials because my knowledge of physics is abysmal but if you passed a physics course in high school i doubt it’s nearly as challenging.

there are two main types of sunscreens, chemical and mineral sunscreens. mineral sunscreens tend to feel less absorbent and will leave you with a white cast, while chemical sunscreens absorb more easily and do not use a white cast as they have different ingredients. they also tend to have very little fragrance. this seems more in line with what you're looking for from a sunscreen. here is the chemical sunscreen i use - i just buy a huge tub of it so i never run out (and because the big bottle price is actually quite reasonable) and can use it lots without feeling bad and it's never bothered my sensitive nose or left a white cast no matter how much i sweat! it's also spf 50 so fairly strong.

picked up yellowface by rf kuang and finished it the same day. recommended it to my partner, who also devoured it in three days.

highly recommend if you’re looking for an easy, juicy (in the way of reality tv, so a little anxiety inducing also) read that’s about ego, publishing, the literary establishment’s treatment of minority authors, the actual mechanisms of being cancelled, and the perils of being Extremely On Twitter. a very fun summer read.
