Some light uplifting news amid *gestures at everything*. I saw this a minute ago from the guy who runs TheCodingHorror and co-founded Stack Overflow and Discourse: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1ifd3ys/im_giving_away_half_my_wealth_to_make_the/

No EA stuff! $1M each going to eight great charities and non-profits as far as I can tell: Children’s Hunger Fund, First Generation Investors, Global Refuge, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, PEN America, The Trevor Project, Planned Parenthood, and Team Rubicon. (from The Trevor Project's blog post)

Friends don’t let friends OSINT

i can stop any time I want ^I^ ^swear^

The youtube page you found is less talked about, though a reddit comment on one of them said “anyone else thinking burntbabylon is Luigi?”. I will point out that the rest of his online presence doesn’t really paint him as “anti tech” overall, but who can say.

apparently there was an imposter youtube channel too I missed

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/brian-thompson-unitedhealthcare-death-investigation-12-9-24#cm4hp9zyk000m3b6nobdudr15

not sure what his official instagram is, but I saw a mention of the instagram account @nickakritas_ around the beginning of his channel (assuming it's his). didn't appear in the internet archive though.

also saw these twitter & telegram links to promote his channel, the twitter one was deleted or nuked (I use telegram to talk with friends who have it but the lack of content removal + terrible encryption means I don't touch unknown telegram links with a 10ft pole, so I have no idea what's in there):

I missed a couple videos which survived on the internet archive but I couldn't make it through 5 seconds of any of them. one of them ("How Humans Are Becoming Dumber") cites that tech priest guy Gwern Branwen and "Anti-Tech" was gone from the channel name by then. he changed the channel name a lot so maybe he veered away from it being an anti-tech channel?

edit: channel names were a little wrong, I put them in the parent comment

I saw this linked in the weekly thread and thought it was about Godot at first, but I thought that was just me. Didn't expect to see 90% of the people here thought the same thing lol

edit: oh man, some of those comments. I still get culture shock from true believers, I forgot this probably got some attention on the orange site

Hidden horses is too good of a phrase to leave buried here

We lost 'Mechanical Turk' as a descriptor for AI because it's literally the name of the service they use for labeling training data. 'Actually Indians' is still on the table.

I think he might have adhd.

Oh no, I don't think we're ready for him to start mythologizing autism + ADHD.

Watching my therapist pull up Musk facts on his phone for 40 minutes going "bro check this out you're just like him frfr" the moment he learned I was autistic was enough for me. Please god don't let musk start talking about hyperfocusing.

I feel like the Internet Archive is a prime target for techfashy groups. Both for the amount of culture you can destroy, and because backed up webpages often make people with an ego the size of the sun look stupid.

Also, I can't remember but didn't Yudkowsky or someone else pretty plainly admit to taking a bunch of money during the FTX scandal? I swear he let slip that the funds were mostly dried up. I don't think it was ever deleted, but that's the sort of thing you might want to delete and could get really angry about being backed up in the Internet Archive. I think Siskind has edited a couple articles until all the fashy points were rounded off and that could fall in a similar boat. Maybe not him specifically, but there's content like that that people would rather not be remembered and the Internet Archive falling apart would be good news to them.

Also (again), it scares me a little that their servers are on public tours. Like it'd take one crazy person to do serious damage to it. I don't know but I'm hoping their >100PB of storage is including backups, even if it's not 3-2-1. I'm only mildly paranoid about it lol.

If he collects enough metrics, he could make a horrendously cursed blogpost out of it like Aella

Oh whoops, I should have archived it.

There were about 7 images posted of users roleplaying with bots, all ending with a bot response that cut off halfway with an error message that read "This content may violate our policies; blablabla; please use the report button if you believe this is a false positive and we will investigate." The last one was some kind of parody image making fun of the warning.

Most of them were some kind of romantic roleplay with bad spelling. One was like, "i run my hand down your arm and kiss you", and the bots response triggered the warning. Another one was like, "*is slapped in the face* it's okay, I still love you" and the rest of the message generated a warning. There wasn't enough context for that one, so the person might have been writing it playfully (?), but that subreddit has a lot of blatant sexual violence regardless.

I love this but I don't know if I have the same royal Grape Fanta energy in me. I think I'm on one of the alternate themes but I like #333333

I'm not familiar with Indian politics but I'm curious if anyone understands what this site is or what its politics are https://democracycollective.in (I'm just nosy and curious, I saw this pop up out of nowhere)

Though maybe I already have an idea:

I hate that I saw that same post earlier today

Here's a quote from the book:

AI already transcends human perception — in a sense, through chronological compression or “time travel”: enabled by algorithms and computing power, it analyzes and learns through processes that would take human minds decades or even centuries to complete.

Glad to know the calculators I had in school were capable of time travel

"Helldump" is my new favorite term for that

Sometimes you find really crazy stuff in people's histories. This year, I've found a Black neo-nazi, an alt-right plural system, and a Thelemist who is just so beyond the pale I literally cannot paraphrase what they said and have to quote it in full: https://www.reddit.com/user/Nexist418/comments/i6is83/banned_reddits_and_the_reasons_if_known/

/r/animememes :: Did not use the banned word "trap" but explained how banning the word was an empty meaningless gesture. Also, demonstrated how Communism is a failure (in the private messages with the mods). Despite doing as they asked, and despite not having broken the rules, they have not bothered to adhere to their end of the deal. Not surprising Communists never seem to do what they promise.

I just follow the prime directive with these people, but I think it's mostly because I'm not good enough with words to accomplish anything by confronting them. I remember this one impassioned thread on like, /r/HarryPotter or maybe /r/books about HPMoR and all the crazy TREACLES stuff. And I understood them completely, but I felt bad because it had like, two comments, and neither really got what OP was trying to communicate. They were like, "I love HPMoR, it's so upsetting that bad people online co-opted it! That's crazy. Thanks for the heads up!"
