My biggest gripe is that they are incredibly distracting to use while driving. The safety implications are huge. I hate on-screen buttons. On top of that most are poorly coded and run slowly.

I am aware that upvoted posts make it to https://kbin.social/fav however that just doesn't work well as I already have 1,000+ pages in there. Moreover, that only registers upvoted posts and not comments. A workaround would be to just use boost, and only upvote when you want to "save" but that is just not conventional imho. The ability on /r to simply save a comment or a post is truly basic but effective.

Navigating kbin be like (media.kbin.social)

I was airdropping some recent vacation pictures to my MBP from my wife's iPhone 13 Pro and noticed that most files ended up being around 2MB in size which I thought was very small.

Started doing some experimenting and discovered the following:

When selecting a set of pictures in Photos on Mac or an iPhone and selecting Share - Airdrop to another Mac or iPhone, the pictures are compressed 5-fold. (they go from 10MB to 2MB).

When selecting the same set of pictures in Photos on Mac or an iPhone, exporting them to a folder, and then selecting that folder and using Share - Airdrop to another Mac or iPhone, the pictures are not compressed. (file size unchanged).

After doing some research, I found out that two settings need to be adjusted on your iPhone. One, you need to go to Settings > Photos, and under Transfer to Mac and PC, select Keep Originals (that's a permanent setting). Two, and that is not a permanent setting, you have to do it every single time (totally stupid imo), when you are tapping the Share icon, before you tap AirDrop, look for the Options button at the top of the Share sheet, select that, and toggle on All Photos Data (that option does not exist in Photos on a Mac or at least I can't find it). Doing the two will result in full-sized pictures via AirDrop.

Pretty annoying that this is so convoluted and now I finally know why we sent low-quality photos to friends in the past.

It seems that any Lemmy.world and Lemmy.ml hosted communities aren't any longer federating properly via kbin as I started getting 404 errors on all of them. Examples:

https://lemmy.world/c/personalfinance: ok
https://kbin.social/m/personalfinance@lemmy.world: 404

https://lemmy.ml/c/fire: ok
https://kbin.social/m/finance@lemmy.ml: 404

https://beehaw.org/c/finance: ok
https://kbin.social/m/finance@beehaw.org: ok

Negative, because spez is a dick and ernest is a cool dude. Having said that, Ernest is the person who build kbin (the software) and also kbin.social (this instance of the kbin software), amongst other things.

You can now use Lemmy Explorer to easily look up Communities and generate kbin-friendly links!

  1. Go to https://lemmyverse.net/

  2. Click on "Communities" on top center

  3. Click on the house button on top right, and enter "kbin.social" as your instance (or any other kbin instance you may be using)

  4. Toggle switch below on for "Instance links use /m/" (yellow)

  5. Browse, search, and sort as you wish

  6. All links will be in the in the https://kbin.social/m/community@instance.tld format :)

I feel it's also important to add that, at least in my understanding, Ernest never meant to be next large content aggregator CEO. From what I gather, he is a dev first and foremost, who was publicly alpha-testing what he built as an alternative to lemmy. Somehow this test instance ended up being a reddit migration outlet which he is now trying to keep alive all the while developing its underlying software. That's at least two substantially different full-time jobs with very diverse objectives. It's a miracle it all works as well as it does, tbh.

Ernest just posted some comments clarifying recent changes to Votes, Boosts, Favorites, and Reputation Points:

  • Upvotes & Downvotes function akin to Reddit
  • Boosts count as two Upvotes (link)
  • Favorites are added to https://kbin.social/fav if you Upvote (link)
  • Reputation Points have been updated

In addition to that, Ernest stated that "there is no connection between reputation points and sorting algorithms. It's just info in the profile" (link)

Politicizing the topic through the means of tribalism is certainly an objective of interests against the fediverse so undoubtedly we will see more of that happening as unfortunate as that is. There are absolutely parties interested in pushing manufactured division and creating "us vs them" camps. I certainly hope that most users steer away from the quite frankly silly discussions of why one is better than the other. At the end of the day it should simply be a personal choice based on perhaps aesthetics or some other set of minuscule factors rather than politics. In regards to kbin and it's currently limited functionality: many of today's large platforms began in a very similar fashion. I personally enjoy the quirkiness of kbin and my proverbial hat is off to Ernest for the effort he has put into this.

I was just saying to my spouse this morning how it seems that the smart people have left reddit as there is a discernible drop in the comment quality in some of the communities I frequent. Unfortunately they haven’t even been registered here just yet. I am quitting reddit in a week anyway hopefully by then more of those communities will migrate here. I created two (Signal, Amex), hope others will follow suit.

The amount of apps being developed for iOS / Android is getting really crazy now and new apps keep popping up every day. Updated list below:

  • Artemis (iOS, Android, kbin, lemmy): link
  • Kbam (iOS, kbin, lemmy): link
  • Memmy (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Mlem (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Morpha (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Thunder (iOS, Android, lemmy): link
  • Beyond (iOS, Android, kbin, lemmy): link
  • Jerboa (Android, lemmy): link
  • Slide (Android, lemmy): link
  • Sync (Android, lemmy): link
  • Connect (Android, lemmy): link
  • Summit (Android, lemmy): link
  • Lemon (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Liftoff (iOS, Android, lemmy): link
  • Boost (Android, lemmy): link
  • Bean (iOS, Android, lemmy): link
  • WefWef (Web App, lemmy): link

Most apps on the list are lemmy apps, meaning they don't work with kbin. Artemis is specifically designed to work with kbin, not sure if or when any of the other ones will go in that direction or become interoperable as there are some challenges with the kbin API at the moment. Having said that, a new API is in the works (https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/pulls/357) so things should get better with time.

Some of the apps are in a very early stage of development so it may happen that they adjust OS availability and platform support.

@ernest Fantastic news and big thanks to all that are helping! @ernest I feel you will keep seeing several thousand users join in daily as the reddit shitshow continues to play out. There are now 10 apps being developed that will further support the transition especially as the July 1st shutdown takes place. That’s probably when a much bigger wave of new users will come in. Is your infrastructure scalable to allow for this onslaught? Thank you and everyone else again for your hard work!

Something nostalgic and familiar about beta testing new apps, seeing the community grow, and getting 500 Internal Server Error screens in the process... I like it in a quirky kinda way

@halo5 What I see many comment on Reddit on is that they don’t necessarily have an issue with 3rd party apps going away or the API becoming a paid feature. I can understand that although I am an Apollo user since day one, and to me Reddit is Apollo. The problem is though, none of those are the key issue here anymore. It’s not about Apollo or APIs any longer, it’s about poor leadership and corporate greed. This is what a big portion of the community there is not getting. Even if they reversed course tomorrow, I’d still be hard pressed to return or ever give even a cent to Reddit because now I loathe the company behind it.
