A Blackwing deck missed the top cut at YCS Vancouver by just two points!

I’m really glad to see some text-based, website-based coverage of the TCG from a site that’s not konami.blog.

This site is like Road of the King but for the TCG instead of the OCG.

I wish locals would advert their prizing, so I thought I’d make a thread about it. What’s good and bad prizing at your local shops?

With 18 people in attendance, I got $25 for first, and the distribution was pretty flat, with 5th-6th getting like $10 each. I thought it was pretty fair, though they offer no participation pack, which made me feel a little sorry for the younger players.

Anyone got any predictions ahead of the ban list? I think it will be out in around two weeks, yeah?

Some people think Kashtira Arise-Heart will finally get banned since Kashtira has been strong for so long.

I’ll be interested to see if they touch Purrely at all.

For my own very selfish reasons, I hope Rikka Sunavalon remains completely untouched, but I acknowledge that the deck feels fairly consistent and very unfair to play against. As far as predictions go, I’m really not sure. If the two top decks got meaningful hits, it kinda seems like this one will too, otherwise it might be the only “tier zero” deck in the format… Though untouched Dragon Link might be able to compete?

I think (and hope!) Eradicator Epidemic Virus will finally get hit, and that Labrynth will remain otherwise untouched. Anti-Spell Fragrance and DBarrier seem likely to get banned. So many decks build “unbreakable” boards now, why also give the player who goes first an out-of-engine, out-of-archetype auto win floodgate? There already isn’t enough back-and-forth for many people’s liking, and this makes that even more dramatic.

I think so, yes. For as long as it exists, people will try to find ways to bring it out.

I’m thinking I’ll build frogs/sharks/aquas or something.

Someone creased one of my cards last night, just kinda “pinched” it off the top of the deck while trying shuffle my deck like playing cards. Thankfully it was only a ~7 dollar card, but it was still frustrating.

Given how bad some of the newer rarities look to me, I’m curious: what’s everyone’s favorite rarity? Which rarities do you think are too loud or cluttered or whatever?

I thought Ghost Rare was amazing when it came out, but a Collector’s Rare (esp. when in a sleeve) just doesn’t look that good to me. It kinda looks “dirty.”

I think the image runs together a bit — I’d like it if there were harder outlines, or a broader variety of colors used.

There’s this consequence of manufacturing where when they put, like, 4 ultras and 2 secrets in a box, if the 12 packs on the right (assuming a 24 pack box) have a secret rare in spot 1, and an ultra rare in spots 4 and 9, then the left side will also have a secret rare in spot 1, an ultra rare in spot 4, and an ultra rare in spot 9. Apparently this is not true for all manufacturers, and it’s more prevalent in some regions than others.

But basically, if you buy one pack at a time, you could be buying from the “other half” of a box where someone took all the packs from the left side, then the most valuable packs from the right side, selling you something unlikely to hold a high rarity card (though I think you could still get a starlight or QC rare since they do not try to get them in a certain proportion per box).

Aaaand a friend just explained “box mapping” to me :’(

[-] fcarbone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Fine, you’ve convinced me, I’ll pick up a copy!!

You absolutely started a trend! That post got a lot of engagement! I thought it might be cool to repeat it as the subreddit is growing to give new users a chance to be part of the conversation, and to share their favorite card.

I'm also curious, are there typically many public/side events on Day 2?

[-] fcarbone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Wow, I only just realized how bad the image resolution on DuelingBook is for this kind of screengrab -- I'll be sure to use something else in the future.

The Traptrix Cularia in the side deck was nothing short of BRILLIANT, and I immediately bought myself a copy once I understood the explanation.

I'll look into this one, that's what I heard from a friend as well wrt Floowandereeze. Swordsoul seems like another good option for what I'm looking for, I think.

Thanks for the reply! I'll be sure to check it out.

Deck lists (esp. from recent tournaments), rulings, strategy, content to help improve one's own gameplay -- I like the TCG, and I like competing. I think on the old site, there was a separate Yugioh101 that was more educational, but IMO it's best not to split across multiple communities until the separate groups/discussions become large enough to sustain themselves. I'd be curious to hear what others think.
