Hi all,

So I started YNAB a few years ago, and found myself enjoying the accounting aspects more than the budgeting aspects. When the price kicked up, I thought I'd explore the personal accounting space some more.

So I started using GNUCash and learned about double entry accounting. Which was fun sometimes, less fun other times. I liked that I could use Git with the save file, didn't like entering every. single. transaction. manually. I could never figure out the bank sync.

Eventually, I switched to Quicken, and have been mostly OK with it so far (on Mac). Though I'm still not used to using Reports and the like for personal analytics, the mobile app is clunky, and I occasionally run into wonky bugs with sync or with the general app.

How do you all go about tracking funds in accounts, if at all?

Thanks!

Please forgive the multiple posts. My UI is glitchy af and reports errors when there were none.

Can confirm that bootleg printer ink is a thing. It used to be all I used. While sites dedicated to it off Amazon doesn’t cut it.

But as someone else pointed out, manufacturers have been adding “DRM” to cartridges in more recent years. Even in older printers, I will get complaints doubting the authenticity of the cartridges I was putting in.

Interesting — coming from the Linux world where docker is an 'apt install' away, I struggled with docker installation on Mac and settled on their client because of various “gotchas” I saw online. And even then got pissed because the client overwrote my local 'kubectl' bin.

Guess I’ll have to reevaluate.

ADHD person here. And I’m just so drained from spending hours meticulously looking for (essentially) $20.

It’s not about money — I’ll live without the $20. I’ve just lost so many important things in my life so many times that it drives me absolutely fucking insane. Seething, heart thumping, muscle flexing rage.

And what makes things worse is that I take measures to prevent this from happening. So when I still lose things, the failure just cuts twice as deep.

Not looking for any solutions atm. Just venting to folks who might get it while I physically recover and let the loss go. Thanks all.

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any apps that track your location over time and map it so that you can see where you were at a given time? Preferably one that doesn't upload any of this information to a/the cloud?

I'm a forgetful person and often wonder "what was I don't last Tuessday?" or "When did I get home?" or "How long was I at X?". Sometimes I also just want to contribute to things like OpenStreetMaps for less mapped areas (though I know this requires very frequent pings).

I used to use this feature using Google Location History but stopped because I decided I didn't want to give them any more of my data than necessary.

If anyone plays Legend of Zelda BOTW or TOTK, I'm thinking of it as a sort of personal "Hero's Path Mode".

I know this isn't part of the federated toolset that most in these parts prefer, but I have to use Slack for work. Thought this was interesting.

IMO, these are the kinds of moves that’ll catalyze a new piracy movement in the mainstream.

I’ve considered that this might be a helpful tactic for NSFW communities — leave the moderation on Reddit and just bring content over here 🤷

kbin looks nice, though this is the first I'm hearing of it 🧐

That’s really my main concern too. Also, I am already on call at my day job, I’d rather not sign up to do that for a passion project too.

One thing I’ve thought of is trying to set up a an instance that mirrors some subreddits via RSS. No comments though, because API access.

Mm that’s a good counter. I concede!

the only reason ADHDers struggle is because society is set up wrong, but I don’t think that’s true, at least for me.

I’d say you’re exceptional in that you’re very clear on your least favorite parts of ADHD and recognize that society can’t do much to help.

For me, the H is particularly problematic as an office worker. And even as a uni student, I thought it was insane how many of my classmates were capable of just… spending all day in their rooms. Studying or gaming or whatever. Growing up, I always had eager companions for shaking off the restlessness and it never occurred to me that I was unusual.

My recurring thought was “how are people expected to do this?” Which I think falls in line with the societal blame angle.

Being unable to remember anything, unable to self-start, and hypersensitive to rejection would be massive problems in any world.

But you pointed out some very real issues I have with myself and have my own coping mechanisms for. Going this route, I think the “wired different” interpretation pointed out by others makes the most sense.

Generally, I don’t have an issue with it. “Ill” implies that I’ve ever had a “healthy” state and that I want to get back there. And that’s just not true.

I lurked because everything I had to say had already been said, or so it seemed.

Seems like, with less users, that's less likely to happen. Been nice.

Is this a TechnologyConnections reference? haha

I'm most excited about the "barely worth mentioning" updates to Safari, Maps, Airpods, and autocorrect lol.

Folks on Mastodon were bashing the "Web Apps" conversation but… I would really prefer to install less glorified-site-wrappers on my stuff, thanks. Like they basically knocked out 2 of the 3 reasons I opted for Edge over Safari:

  • Install sites like Slack, Discord, YoutubeMusic as apps rather than using an electron wrapper
  • Work vs Personal profiles w/ history and extensions
  • Optimized memory usage & Automatic tab "sleeping"

As for Maps: I like Siri's voice, and the "turn left but stay in the second from left lane to do it" has saved me from road rage a number of times. It's nicely integrated to Contacts, so I just say "Navigate to Mom/Sister/SO" early in the drive. But I don't use it because of the absurd amount of data usage the app uses (I'm on a limited prepaid plan). So this is basically all I've been waiting for to drop my GMaps usage down to just "what's good around here?" type usage.

Airpods' adaptive usage seems perfect for the way I think airpods are best used — while walking around. If I'm camping out at a cafe or something, I pull out the full sized headphones. But if I'm walking or running, I bring out the airpods. Usually in transparency mode, toggling it off if things get too loud to hear. Looking forward to trying the new feature.

And autocorrect has been getting worse — significantly so. Whatever it is they do, I hope it works :)
