Honestly the whole fediverse feels too fragmented for the average user, myself included. I chose lemmy.ml because I want to be where everyone else is. I'm not sure I entirely understand how this all works, but therein lies the problem for the average user.
Same... why would I use a smaller instance when the bigger one has more stuff on it? Maybe I just don't understand this instance thing properly, it all just feels so fragmented

This is my hope too. For Lemmy to be successful we need third party apps that are just as high quality as the Reddit ones were. The desktop version is good, but most people want a great app, myself included.
