The government is a tool of the billionaire class. Weakening it weakens their power. Also any buying nothing movement would harm the billionaires much more than the government.

You know that "defeating" the billionaires would screw over everyone on earth more than toppling the government of Florida or Texas? They have so much power removing their wealth, especially suddenly would destroy the global economy..

Any solution to the larger problem of oligarchy is going to hurt everyday americans. Buying nothing would at least give them extra money in their pocket to adapt to the changes.

There are a lot of things that have to happen for us to go from the world we are in today, to a world where individuals need to avoid being critical of the state online or face reprisal.

Advice like this seems helpful, but regular citizens being punished (by the government) for what they say online is very unlikely. Instance owners and influencers sure, but not your average netizen.

Sounds good to me. I doubt our new machine overlords would let the iranians or russians do anything with their new toys, but either way I am totally okay with this outcome, if for no other reason than I want to see all the bigots suddenly dealing with their periods.

Attempting to explain subjective experiences (suffering) through objective logic is folly. Inherently emotions are irrational, especially from the perspective of the "sufferer".

Scientifically, yes the brain is constructed in such a way that physical and emotional pain are commonplace. Regardless of how that came to be it is a useful trait for self-preservation present not only in humans but many other intelligent animals. Crows have funerals for their dead, bonobos have extremely human-like social structures, and whales sing songs of sorrow. Suffering is not unique to humans or special in some way, it is simply a biological process that most animals possess.

No combination of words will ever end suffering, nor should we try to. Suffering has subjective value, it makes you appreciate good things more, it warns you of situations that might disturb your emotional health, and has inspired almost all human innovation (and cruelty). A life without suffering would be without substance.

As to a creator, God is quite literally your understanding of God. Our brains have a specific section that creates profound "religious" experiences or epiphanies. Contemplating the nature of god or a creator can only ever be explained in terms of your beliefs as God offers no proof of thier existence (at least all the popular gods anyway) so any attempt to know them is doomed to failure. That is doubly true for the abrahamic god, who is understood to be inherently ineffable.

I'd honestly like to hear your take more broadly (what's going on with the christians) on the topic if you were willing to share. I was brought up in the (babtist) church but no longer hold faith. Even still I like what JC had to say and have been appalled by what's been going on because it is so far from what I was raised to understand. I'd be very curious to hear what someone with faith feels about the situation.

I don't disagree with you. Realistically if you're serious about security and a state level actor is in your threat model, you probably shouldn't be using social media at all, but especially not platforms that focus on followers and public posts rather than one-on-one or small group connections. At least not for day to day usage.

That is funny. Ah ah ah.

Stunts make headlines, not change. Change and fixing the problem these groups are fighting against takes work and lots of it.

I think those of us who care about our climate would be better served by larger scale collective action aimed at the profits of companies benefitting from destroying our environment. Even the groups you mentioned by name though probably couldn't collectively agree on where to apply pressure.

We're going to all get a lot more done if we're willing to compromise and find common ground than all trying to do our own things. In my opinion the time for uncompromising idealism and lofty goals is past. We need targeted, specific, collective action anyone who cares to can participate in. The hurdle will be finding consensus on what specifically to apply that effort towards.

Yeah but an xbox's gpu can play games too. You don't need a 3080ti to play any game on the market. Dedicated gpus are almost entirely a luxury upgrade with the power of today's iGPU's.

Personally I'd recommend focusing your time and energy on the things you can control. As an individual, there is nothing you can do alone about it. If you feel strongly enough about it you could join or start an advocacy organization about the part of the problem you find most galling. But the truth is unless enough people both want change and are motivated to take action to get it the world will continue its decline unchecked.

Volunteer if you can, but try not to let it get to you. The impersonal brutality of our world sucks butts. Some horny french guy would tell you that life is absurd. If everyone agreed we shouldn't burn fossil fuels, we wouldn't. But we can't ever all agree about anything. Most landlords aren't malicious, they just don't understand how their greed affects others and don't care enough to try. The horny french guy's drinking buddy and metamore would say you can only laugh at the absurdity of existing at all. If you look hard enough the entire universe seems in on how fucked we all. Do what you can, but find something else that makes it bother you less (like a hobby, not a meth habit). I like writing weird stuff and being the model maliciously compliant tenant.

You totally have a move with the landlord. Follow the rules of your lease chapter and verse. I bet there is a specific clause in there about you being responsible for any unreported maintenance issues. And there is also a clause saying something about the landlord's responsibility to perform maintenance. There is usually some wiggle room, but there is probably like a two week window in which the landlord is required to fix any issues with their building.

Report everything. Get on a first name basis with the maintenance folks and whoever answers the phone for your landlord. I had a roach problem because my next door neighbor was a hoarder and left my landlord voicemails every night updating them on all the new locations I have found roaches and my efforts to eradicate them myself. Once the roaches were dealt with my landlord was very willing to overlook those maintenance fees because it's cheaper than court.

Edit: and was probably grateful not to deal with that tenant.
