That's an excellent reason to try and live in the moment and enjoy what you have while you have it.

I realized shortly after posting that comment there would be a low chance that canada would be a state. It'd probably be more like Puerto Rico, pay taxes, but not vote for anything that matters outside of the territory.

I was aware of the maga nuts in Canada, I didn't realize they had enough votes to actually matter though. Plus y'all burned down the white house once, I'm sure even the craziest canadian would be made about losing their sovereignty. Surely?

There are too many loop holes to the traffic lights. The jesus freaks would quote the bible about it and say, "The rain falls on the just and unjust alike." Personally I'm a fan of "everybody poops."

Omg, that stupid game that was released with the book ate like six months of my life.

Aw babe, we've been eating nothing but cryptbro podcasters for weeks, do you think we could try some audio fiction podcasters tonight?

Most of that comes from how much smaller Lemmy is than Reddit and the demographic of Lemmy users. I don't have hard information, but at least anecdotally the average Lemmy user is about ten years older, it seems more men use it even than reddit, and skews extremely left.

The low volume of users means a lot less content and fewer niche communities. The biggest between Lemmy and Reddit though is the lack of bots. There are bots on Lemmy for sure and probably the same kinds that are most of reddit, but there just isn't as big of an incentive because the ROI is smaller.

It is! Or at least what a previous therapist thought.

In real terms, we still have a lot left to lose before things get so bad it's time to take up arms. The left is losing because it has spent all of its time responding to what the right has been doing and not enough time working towards the things their constituents want.

It is time to organize and get directly involved if you care about keeping things from getting worse. I can't say this with any authority but there are three problems we have to solve:

  1. How can we reestablish a common reality with our neighbors? (Mis- and disinformation)
  2. How can we pull our neighbors back from the influence of fascists?
  3. How can we ensure that our children inherit better than what we have now and are about to go through?

The fight will come later, and it will come. Right now we have to prioritize supporting each other. We're on our own for at least the next two years, we need to get creative and find ways to thrive in spite of the bullshit.

To the dead Palestinian children they are.

Do you feel like your inaction is fine because either way, the genocide doesn't end?

Pretty much. Less genocide is not a compelling argument. The children who died with Kamala in the White House would be just as dead with Trump.

It’s naive to the point of absurd self delusion. And roughly 95% of our media and government is going along with the delusion.

I think everyone paying attention is fatigued by everything being the end of the world. Trump fetishists aren't going to change their minds and everyone who sees the danger he represents don't need to be told. The sky has been falling for eight years with Trump and so far nothing has even slowed him down (aside from the 2020 loss).

We're almost done. Trump does not have another run in him. He's half crazed now, by 2028 he'll have his hands full dealing with the dementia. All that matters is that he loses. If Kamala wins, Trump is no longer America's problem.

Personally I'm more concerned with what's going on in red state governments and their efforts to pass heinous laws that will get challenged to the supreme court and erode the rights of all Americans. Unless Kamala expands the court of the house impeaches some justices, it doesn't really matter who is in the oval office.

On a technical level, no. You're right. It would not be possible to capture the protocol entirely. But meta has serious cash to spend on marketing Threads. If they can capture enough of the ActivityPub market and were to collab with Bluesky and use their protocol (I forget the name), or make their own, it's only a matter of time before the drop activitypub and force users either to join threads or lose access to their users.

Threads and Bluesky are kind of an existential threat to ActivityPub given Meta and Twitter's track record with Open Graph, bootstrap, and public api's.
