It's a good way to try it out. You can also use a live usb or cd where you can boot Linux into memory and it won't affect your current installation.

Great write-up. I somehow missed this as a kid. I probably played the Speccy version at some point but don't remember playing the ST version despite having a drawer full of disks from all the main groups.
