These are my first minis from Alternative Armies, and are part of their Flintloque game system.
Completed some more Ashigaru for use in various games. Tried using paint pens for the first time; it went 'ok'. Definitely quicker, though less control.

Testors dullcote would be my recommendation. Should be able to source through your local hobby shop, or online through somewhere like Amazon.
It's one of the base ready packs from geek gaming scenics. Scrublands I think. I smoothed out the base first with some generic filler putty, which gave it a pale sandy textur underneath. Quick and effective.
