IIRC, the film didn't try to show that to be everyone's reaction, just the mainstream reaction. In controversies like that, the current media landscape would push that disgust narrative, and it would largely be accepted by audiences. There would undoubtedly be individuals and online communities who disagree with that narrative, but they would largely be ignored or misconstrued by mainstream forces.
And that makes sense with the film's main themes too. One of Superman's greatest traits is his ability to inspire other people, even when there are forces pushing other narratives against him.
