Oh, I wasn't making a slippery slope argument. I meant that this is what should happen. We exported most of the devastating impact on the environment and the terrible working conditions to developing countries so that we can enjoy tons of crap we don't really need. If things we buy would reflect the actual costs we would have to limit how much we consume. Of course no one would like it.

Why not just take all the homeless from Chicago and send them to warm Florida?

So after the last derailment I was watching some YT channel and they said that the railway company brought 3rd party lab to test the water and my immediate thought was "why would you trust a company paid by the culprit to asses the damage?" I mean it's USA, of course it's corrupt. Week later they were talking about this big company that bought all the labs and is now making tons of money by always getting results favourable to the corporations ordering tests.

The most amazing part of all this is that the American channel didn't pick up on this at first and all the people drinking contaminated water trusted the results. The entire country was taken over long time ago and they still didn't realize it. Insane.

There's no cure for stupid. Where I live a year of two ago they had to rescue a lady with kids from a trail because it got late they didn't had any headlamps. The lady said she didn't realize it will get dark. Seriously? You think there are street lamps in the mountains or something?

If they were following a trail using a GPS they could always just follow it back. If you don't know the trail and GPS is you only lifeline make sure you have enough power for the whole day and some more. Have a backup device. If the trail gets hard make sure you can follow it in the opposite direction. Those are all basic things. There's really nothing you can do to stop stupid people from walking into mountains and calling for help. Google Maps has nothing to do with it.

I wouldn't say "the world" is anti-intellectual, some populists are. The US right is definitely anti-intellectual and they have better PR so you're getting a lot of if in the media. It's because Republican voters are mostly from small towns and not well educated so the party is trying to demonize education as something elitist. It's the same in Poland where the ruling, far-right party's electorate are mostly people from smaller towns and villages. But in Spain where the right wing voters are mostly upper class and well educated and left wing voters are working class you don't see a lot of anti-intellectual rhetoric. For example the anti-vax movement during covid was mostly non-existent here. I think UK is the same: right wing party is the party of well educated voters so they don't promote anti-intellectual ideas.

I would agree if the purpose of GPS navigation was to allow you to drive with all your windows covered. It's not. When you're driving and can't see what's in front of you (because you're blinded by something, because there's fog, because it raining hard or because Batman is throwing smoke bombs) you have to slow down appropriately or stop entirely if necessary. I can understand following GPS indications and getting stuck in some mud but not falling of a bridge. If you don't see the rode in front of you: stop.

It's just insane. Where I live fire-fighters closely follow weather forecast, have deep understanding of wind patters in the area and if there's any risk a forest fire will reach a village everyone is immediately evacuated. When volcano erupted in La Palma the mayor was personally knocking on doors to see if everyone left. Posting evacuation orders on X is a joke.
