This would lead to some very large cost savings if AI could compress video/audio even better than current compression algorithms. Data borders unite!

There is no need for an actual installed adblocker. You can simply change system wide DNS to black ads. You can really use any DNS you choose, but I'd suggest mullvads DNS.

https://mullvad.net/en/help/dns-over-https-and-dns-over-tls/

Look for "private DNS" on your phone, or switch it on your browser if on desktop.

Holy shit y'all. Developers need to eat too. It's totally fine to charge for an app or serve ads. LjDawson is a fantastic developer and really listens to his user base. Yes there are plenty of open source apps to use, but sometimes closed source is way more polished because the developer makes it their job to create the app. Living isn't free. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Instead of asking "why?" consider asking "why not?"

[-] DM_Gold@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 year ago

Wait is this actually a thing? I've always wondered why I never stick with something long enough to master it. I can hyperfocus when I want to but holy shit this would make so much sense.

As of right now, yes your account would go poof. Mastodon currently has a way to migrate servers, but it hasn't been implemented in Lemmy yet. I'm sure at some point it will become available, but if you are worried about all your posts I'd make local backups for now.

Great fucking article. Nice look into the history of proprietary software. This part stuck out to me:

But there’s one thing my own experience with XMPP and OOXML taught me: if Meta joins the Fediverse, Meta will be the only one winning. In fact, reactions show that they are already winning: the Fediverse is split between blocking Meta or not. If that happens, this would mean a fragmented, frustrating two-tier fediverse with little appeal for newcomers.

We need to convince instance owners not to federate with Meta. History tends to repeat itself and I'd rather not see this nice little corner of the internet die.

For instance say I post a guide on how to do something related to piracy...should I be concerned that my IP is being logged? I understand if it is logged it is most likely saved on the instance server I'm posting on. What I'm asking is if I should be constantly using a VPN while browsing or posting on instances?

So say I make an account on lemmy.world and post a bunch of stupid comments around other instances then decide to delete my account because I'm ashamed of them. After I delete my account, a copy of all those comments I made on other instances remain on those instances as a "shadow copy." There isn't any way to actually delete them all. The copies of the comments/posts on your home instance will be deleted

tldr: Don't say stupid shit on other instances you'll regret later! They never leave that instance!

Why YSK: so you can think carefully about what to comment and post.

I migrated from beehaw. You can see my previous post history here: DM_Gold@beehaw.org

Honestly I hope so. I like this little corner of the internet. What the mods of beehaw do is entirely up to them. If they wish to keep themselves defederated that is fine. They know that what they did was a basic nuke to their instance. They were struggling and made the right call.

[-] DM_Gold@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 year ago

I'm a former beehaw user and I honestly think they made the right call for their space. They want it to be safe and inclusive for everyone, so the large influx of users at l.world and s.i.j.w was leading trolls to beehaw in droves. No, they don't intend to defederate from all instances. In fact, this defederation is most likely temporary until they either get more moderators, or the other two instances settle down some.
