Cyberpunk Repo Driver (literature.cafe)

Jaes spun his keys in his hands, the metal rattling as it ran circles. He whistled in tune with his steps, forming a sort of funky blues rhythm. He liked blues. That centuries old slow paced music was something to appreciate, a real stop and smell the roses type of thing that these younger folk didn't appreciate. He slid into his rumbling truck, soft jazz already playing through the speakers in the back. These younger folk didn't appreciate a lot of things, sound especially. Like a good saxophone solo, or a good pair of tires running over hard asphalt. Gas engines like his were a thing of the past; he'd even gotten offers from museums, believe it or not! Now it was all about them liquid mercury engines, and floating cars, and loud fast music, and he didn't understand a lick of it.

Now, Jaes was a hard working man, just like his father. So when his boss told him, "Hey Jaes, go pick up that Cardillolac over on seventy third and a quarter street," Jaes said "On it boss," and went on his way. Didn't matter to him much when somebody flew past him on the latest and greatest, blasting the loudest and proudest, shouting something about oldest and slowest. He did his work, and did it good, whether it was towing some old abandoned beater or some rich kid's daddy's car.

The job had its moments though. He turned the corner, looking up at the big ol' hunk of metal docked next to a building in an alleyway, and immediately knew this would be one of them. He jumped out of the seat and into the bed. With a sigh, Jaes flicked a switch, and just like that his old girl was a floating hunk of metal too. Just as he was about to hook and hauling, some young blood came strutting down the street, hoot and hollering.

"Ay yo! Fuck you doing with my ride, grandpa?"

"You ain't make your payments, boy," Jaes replied. "It ain't your ride no more."

It was then that Jaes realized the mistake he had made. This boy wasn't a real boy. He was more machine than he was human. The cyborg stretched out the limbs he gave himself and clambered up both walls on either side, fire shooting out of the joints. He came up real close to Jaes, face to face with the old timer, so close Jaes would have seen the pores in his skin, if the boy had any.

"Say that again," the robot said.

"My bad," Jaes replied, moving some levers on his truck. "I seem to have made a mistake."

"God damned right you have. Fucking dumb ass."

"You ain't no boy," Jaes said, "You just a fancy little toaster."

The toaster pounded the wall like a boy throwing a tantrum. "I suggest you take your old ass and get the fuck out of here, before I give you an early cremation, you sack of wrinkly shit."

"I'm on my way," said Jaes, pushing a button on his truck. And it was true. He was indeed on his way, and so was the souped up rusted luxury car. The truck flew through the legs of the toaster, the car behind it knocking some of them off their grip. Jaes slung himself through the back window and into the front seat of the car. Behind him, he heard shouts and bursts of flame. In front, he heard the jazz grow louder as he turned up the dial. He turned another corner and merged back onto city streets, settling back into his seat, enjoying the soft sax and bass combo. His windows shattered as a red blast of light darted through the truck cab from the back.

"Shit," he said, reaching for his six gun in the center console.

Blaring loud music pulled up next to him, red bolts of light flying through his windows and into his doors. Jaes stuck his gun out, pumping two quick rounds out at the other flying hunk of metal.

"You're fucking dead old man!" the kid hanging out the window yelled, laser pistol pointing in Jaes' general direction. They were always so caught up in the speed and thrill. That loud music and fast car, it didn't do any favors for him, just made life harder, and his aim worse. The third ringing pop of the pistol turned the kid into a corpse. He heard cussing from the driver seat of that car and clicked his teeth. Always so caught up in the moment, he thought to himself as he ran a light and dove the car into an underground garage. It's always got to be better, faster, louder, something new and exciting. They never take the time to enjoy the little things, like having a stable job, the smell of gunpowder, or a good saxophone solo. Sure, the work wasn't always easy, but Jaes was a hard working man. He got it done, and he got it done good.

I'm very bad at titles. Also, my contributions thus far to this community may imply that I'm a primarily a cyberpunk author, which is not the case.

Liox and Marcius (literature.cafe)

Liox sat up on the metal table as the surgeon stepped back. He examined his body, all the stiff metals coated with fresh blood, but for once all was his own. His metal eyes shone bright as he tested the new augments. Data flooded into his brain in a pounding rush, and yet he felt great. He felt better than great. Liox slid off the table, a bubbling chuckle blooming into a black hearted laugh that echoed around the dinky back room. He was unstoppable now. No one can survive even three augments, and yet here he was with a full eight, and he felt wonderful. Where would he go now? Who would be his next victim? So many options; Liox mulled it over as he played music with the surgeon’s screams.

Detective Marcius pursed his lips tight as he bent over. The breakfast he shoveled down squirmed in his stomach as he looked the room over, the stench of fresh blood and flesh assaulting his nose. This was the third murder this week alone, and they were getting worse. He stepped into the room, latex gloved and masked up. Hours passed searching the room over and over, and not a single clue. Whatever grisly monster tore these bodies apart left no traces; they never did. The trail was always cold. Besides the blood and flesh everywhere, the room was always left exactly as it was. He tried to play the scene out in his head, and shivered. He couldn’t imagine it. Whoever had done this wasn’t human anymore. He was dealing with a genuine monster.

Liox smiled. He was perfect. There was a beauty to his metallic flesh, a certain artistry to the way the augments operated together. Every time he moved, he created art. Crude art, though; he needed subjects to truly create art. They should be grateful; their raw, untainted meat will be the paint on the brush that is his body, as the canvas he worked on will remain untouched. And yet, there were those who envied him, those who pushed their bodies to the limit as he had and mimicked his art. Unworthy copycats, all of them! How dare they try to approach perfection like him? How dare they attempt to transcend their own weakness, and thus taint their flesh? No, this would not stand. The smile wilted on his face. They will suffer, all of them. He would have to deal with it.

Marcius frowned. Another day, another murder. The city was falling apart, and worse yet, he had grown accustomed to it. New cases kept springing up faster than his department could handle them, and the media let everyone know about it. Fear was spreading fast. More and more illegal augments made their way onto the streets as people took extreme measures to protect themselves and their homes. At the same time, more and more good cops were leaving the city. Sometimes, it felt like Marcius was the only detective left trying to stop the madness. He remembered an old story from his childhood. Something about a knight being the last one to stand against an evil barbarian’s rampage, and giving his life to defeat him. Despite it all, Marcius couldn’t help but smile.

A very old short story of mine. Originally written in middle school, I believe, then redone later in high school. This is the second draft.

Currently writing a RWBY fanfic off and on. Would like to post it up somewhere but I don't know if it'd be weird/allowed to post it here.

Edit: Nvm I just started posting it elsewhere.

I quite liked this. Good expansion of lore into the universe you started off in the other prompt thread!

8 long hours of work later, I finally drag my feet across the threshold of my home. A package I almost missed waits like a lonely puppy just off to the side. The serotonin that floods my brain is only partially dulled by the anger at the delivery company. I curse to myself over the fact they deliberately ignored my directions to hide the package underneath the rug and take it inside, bashing myself over forgetting to lock the door.

The 75 square feet apartment that serves as my home, likely now and forever, is host to a single tiny table, a bed, and a kitchen in the form of a Bunsen burner and two pots, with a mini-freezer next to it. The dishes, which I do in the bathroom sink, are all already clean. Squatting onto the floor, I tear the package open and yank out my old, crumbling phone. It's held together with tape and prayers. Literally. The glue holding the glass backing failed and so I keep it taped together, replacing the tape every so often. Still, I'm excited, even though the dead expression staring back at me in the reflection of my shattered screen doesn't show it. The packaging comes apart quite easily, and a shiny new phone worth 3 paychecks and a missed month of rent comes out like the holy grail out of the ark of the covenant. Or however that story goes. I boot it up, in the meantime preparing my old phone for the transfers.

The new phone blinks awake. It's already been configured, and the photo on the lock screen is of myself. A photo I distinctly don't remember taking, because I'm too ugly to come out in photos. It's a photo of me looking back at myself, in my home.

I stare at it for a while, and chuckle to myself. Maybe the phone took a photo of me just now, and automatically set the lock screen wallpaper? Or maybe an AI generated image. Who knows what these fuck ass phone companies get up to nowadays, might just be the latest gimmick. I don't really know, nor does it really matter. I unlock the phone, hoping to be greeted by the intro screen, or setup installer wizard thing or whatever. No, it's just the regular home page, with the wall paper set to another photo of me, at work, and the gallery app sitting square in the middle of the page. I blink at it. Someone had to be fucking with me. Maybe a coworker, or something, a security guard maybe? Shivers crawl up my spine, the hairs on my arm raise on end, a lump in my throat forms. I swallow, a single question tumbling in my mind like a ball bearing in a tin can. I tap open the gallery app.

A single album, my name in white, and the entire thing is photos of me. Photos of me taking a shower under a plastic bag tied to the ceiling, a photo of me cooking, a photo of me getting scolded by the boss, a closeup of me, asleep in the futon on the bed, sleeping sound as a child. My hand starts to shake. There's a small icon in the corner, a cloud sync. The album updates.

A photo of me, crouched on the floor by my table, holding a brand new phone.
