you know what else slows down ambulances? Congestion

I live near a school. Cars go way too fast and blast through intersections. Impeding the flow of car traffic is exactly what we need. I'd rather not require the ambulance in the first place.

I'm working with my neighbors to petition the city to add traffic calming measures (e.g. speed bumps, one way roads) to my street. I'm also hoping to turn it into a bit of a research project. Does anyone know of any tools to monitor or even automate data collection of the speeds of cars, number of cars going by, how many actually stop at intersections/stop signs, etc? If we're successful with the petition, I think it would be nice to be able to present some data from before and after the traffic calming measures are put in place. Thank you in advance!

So true, I watched dune in theaters with my friends and half of us fell asleep lmao

Personally I'm ok with fuck cars being mainly a place for people to express their frustrations with how things are - I think that serves an important role.

I would also like to see places for more nuanced discussions about urbanism for those who are interested. I used to go to r/NotJustBikes for that, but haven't seen any similar communities emerge on Lemmy.

It's also well documented by strongtowns how car infrastructure specifically devastates local communities and bankrupts cities due to how exorbitantly expensive it is. Long car commutes may increase the GDP of a country, but local areas suffer.

This illustrates very well how broken our economic system is lol. What benefits "the economy" (GDP) is not what benefits real people/communities.

I'll also add that while Fairphone markets that they suoport their phones for many years, the firmware of the Qualcomm SoC it ships with stops receiving updates after only a couple years. Your phone will not be secure after this point. Read more here:

If you go to c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world through midwest.social, it shows fewer subscribers in the sidebar than if you go straight to lemmy.world (https://midwest.social/c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world vs https://lemmy.world/c/homeimprovement). Also, there are posts that only show up when you look at c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world through the midwest.social instance, and are missing from the lemmy.world instance.

For example, this post: https://midwest.social/post/4242666 is nonexistent if you look at the homepage on lemmy.world: https://lemmy.world/c/homeimprovement. However, you can see it from the homepage on midwest.social: https://midwest.social/c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world.

Is whole-home surge protection a good idea to protect large appliances, a plug in hybrid car, etc from voltage spikes?

I'm also a little lost in terms of what I should be looking for in a whole home surge protector. Are they all just MOVs, and if so, doesn't that mean they'll wear out and need to be replaced overtime?

TIL downvotes on Lemmy are public lol. That was honestly just a misclick tho, my bad

Definitely possible. The first one lasted nearly 30 years (until 2020), the second lasted less than a year and was still under warranty, and the third just broke a few weeks ago. My repair guy seems to think the replacement part he's been able to get is just lower quality than the original.

A component in my 30 year old Gaggenau oven died and they discontinued the part. Does anyone know of someone in the area who is skilled enough and willing to fabricate the part?

Every once in a while, the heating element seems to break on my Gaggenau EB 378 610 oven. Other than that, it works fine.

This time though, I am unable to find a replacement part since the manufacturer discontinued it. I searched everywhere online and on eBay, but was still unable to find it.

I would rather not buy a new oven since that would be very expensive and I like this one. Does anyone have any ideas about where I can find a replacement heating element? Or am I out of luck?

It's a convection element, part #00098494, 100L

I believe they are - in fact, Bosch acquired Gaggenau at some point. Unfortunately, it looks like both Bosch and Gaggenau discontinued the part :(

Miele vacuums are incredible. I have one that's over 20 years old and still going strong. They're still making accessories that fit it too!
