Don't lump anarchists with way too online MLs.

The National Labor Relations Board could soon make it much easier for workers to unionize. The board plans to re-establish the Joy Silk Doctrine, which would force employers to recognize and bargain with their employees' union if a majority of workers sign authorization cards.

This would turn the tables in favor of workers and eliminate a key union-busting tactic employers use to stifle organizing. By enabling workers to unionize via card check and preventing employers from dragging out the process into a time-intensive union election, the decision would make it vastly easier for workers to win a union.

Steven Greenhouse explains. Greenhouse is a journalist and the author of The Big Squeeze and Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, and Future of American Labor.

The huge ocean current known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC - not the Gulf Stream!) shifts vast amount of water around the world. But scientists fear that by heating the planet and melting the Greenland ice-sheet, we're already slowing it down, with the risk that it could collapse - a potential tipping point with huge consequences around the world. And a new study (published in 2023) has tried to pin down what could happen, when. So what do we actually known about this current, does it have anything to do with the Gulf Stream, and is there anything we can do to protect ourselves?

are we ready to admit that Joe Rogan is basically just a right wing podcaster now or are we going to continue this stupid dance of "no he's just a centrist telling it like it is"

I think we really need to start shoving the noses of Democrats on how much China is beating our ass in just about everything in regard to infrastructure and going green. Pride is about the only thing i can think of that might make the Dems do something other than the barest of bare minimums on these things and point out how the supposedly "bad" country is doing better then us might get people to think. idk anything to challenge American Exceptionalism

oh look people in the comments who are missing the fucking point. I'm honestly so sick of this shit. You either have rainbows and unicorns and "we'll just figure it out"/climate deniers to "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH" apathetic fucks who won't do shit* because "what's the point we are all doomed anyway" which...causes the same problem as denying does.

honestly i've delt with more people who refuse to change anything because "what's the point" than I deal with outright deniers anymore.

*not sure if anyone in the comments is an apathetic "do nothing though tbf and honest. So there is my disclaimer don't @ me.

Filing your taxes could be free starting this year. The IRS is running a direct-file pilot program. The goal is to make companies like TurboTax obsolete through a system where your taxes are filled out for you. But tax prep companies are spending millions to block them.

Why are Intuit and H&R Block so against making filing your taxes free and easy? Because they're making billions by charging you. Americans spend $31 billion each year on tax filing.

In this Our Changing Climate video essay, I look at the validity of vegan and plant-based diets as a solution to climate change. I dive into the human and planetary toll of the meat industry, looking at the massive emissions toll of beef production as well as the exploitative conditions in meat processing plants. Ultimately, I consider whether veganism is an effective tool to dismantling the meat industry and mitigating climate change.

A historic wave of tenant organizing is on the verge of winning renter protections that would be attached to federal loans—affecting 1 in 4 apartments. But Greystar, Blackstone, and AvalonBay are spending millions to block it.

They're a part of a coalition of massive landlords, baks, and investors who are pooling resources to block rent control and renter protection policies.

One of the biggest landlord industry lobbying groups is called the National Multifamily Housing Council. That group has spent almost $10 million lobbying against rent control.

Despite this opposition, we're seeing one of the largest upticks in tenant organizing since the 1970s, as renters across the country face worsening housing crisis. Groups like KC Tenants are at the forefront of this movement, fighting to stop unfair rent hikes and corporate slumlords.

Arctic Sea Ice may be even more vulnerable than climate scientists thought. Whatever happens with climate change, we might see an ice free Arctic in the coming decades. So why does this so-called "Blue Ocean Event" matter for the rest of the planet? And if we lose the ice... can we bring it back?

Train workers, and before you push the whole "but they made a deal recently!" that deal was fucking pathetic and does NOTHING to address the infrastructure issues, and the fact that they are going to try and reduce workers down to 1. At best all it did was let the shitty horrible train infrastructure limp along. I fucking listened to workers whistleblowing for months and it will always fucking enrage me that Palestine did not have to fucking happen. That is on Biden's and the dems hands. You vote for the dems cause you don't have a fucking choice and if you are fortunate enough to live in a situation that you CAN vote (cause the dems do nothing about gerrymandering and other voting issues ) you pinch your nose, vote dem, and then if you actually care about fixing anything, you go back to organizing and building local community. Cause no one else is going to help us, let alone save us. In the words of Robert Evans, I vote just in the weird off chance it fucking does something. I never expect anything good to come federally and it keeps me grounded and able to do actual work. Fuck biden and any of the other west wing brain rot fuckers that is the establishment dems.

I'm really hoping we can do something about that coral reef we found that is resistant to heat and bleaching and learn from it or maybe even somehow use it to genetically help the other reefs

I would take this story with a huge grain of salt. If you ask a cop how's the weather and they tell you it's sunny, bring an umbrella. (In case this isn't clear to some people, it's a saying about how cops fucking lie about everything

[-] Athena5898@kbin.social 23 points 1 year ago

btw, not that it's surprising, but the entire SCOTUS decision was founded on a fucking lie. No one sued that woman and it's pretty common knowledge if you look just slightly. So of course this fucker is hoping it will "help them fight". Fuck these homophobic assholes

[-] Athena5898@kbin.social 32 points 1 year ago

That's the neat part, they don't most of the time. But people get this idea that "well if they are not voting Biden then they are voting trump" then go shock pikachu when the numbers of those who don't vote come out. We ignore it or blame it on the youth for being stupid and then we repeat the mistakes. Because that's easier then dealing with the cognitive dissonance

[-] Athena5898@kbin.social 22 points 1 year ago

Lol its amazing people can say shit like this with a straight face after Bernie. The democratic party said "no fuck you, its us or trump take your slightly socialist dude and fuck off" and a lot of young people did. Thankfully a lot of them took their work in politics and moved it to labor organizing, but please miss me with the "young people just need to get involved" shit when it has proven that any time they do, they get slapped down by said establishment dems. Systematic problems need systematic solutions. If "go vote blue no matter what" spent just as much energy fighting against systematic barriers to voting like gerrymandering, days off, mail in ballots, etc as they did finger wagging and yelling at younger people (cause you know, that'll help) we might be somewhere different.

Don't even get me started on the fact that we need more then voting.

[-] Athena5898@kbin.social 58 points 1 year ago

yeah, i'm glad that there wasn't anything that could of been done under Obama...oh wait (yes it was a multi factor fuck up, but all the fuck ups were from people who were supposed to be "on our side" trying to claim power just a little longer and fucking miss me with the hand waving of there was nothing that could be done! there was!) Voting is important yes but can we stop pretending it's a fucking magic bullet? Cause it's not. Its one tiny itty bitty thing that needs to be done. Hell voting doesn't even work if you don't have any of the other stuff surrounding it. People need to get organized both at home and at work and get ready to take the fight to them through unions and strikes at the very least.

i'm so fucking sick of the answer to all of this is "go vote" when there is much more than just that needing to be done. Don't just vote, go get fucking organized with community, and fucking fight.
