Legally speaking that may be be correct, since Meta has their own advertising platform. They do not "sell your data", but what they do sell is indirect access to your data, via targeted advertising.

[-] jerrythegenius@lemmy.world 32 points 1 year ago

Well they don't need to, they are the advertiser

Please fill out this Cambridge Analytica form to express your doubt.

Technically that wasn’t a sale. CA made a bunch of quizzes with overly broad permission requests and all our friends unknowingly sold us up the river to find out which Star Trek character they were.

I mean, that's TTT: instead of selling your info they charge companies showing you ads you might be interested in.

Yeah, they don't sell info about your personal interests, they only let other companies use it in exchange of money.
Totally different, legally distinct operation....

The only thing that could make it more trustworthy is to have a picture of Zuckerbergs empty-eyed alienoid face there trying to approximate a reassuring smile.

This reminds me of the time when I was like twelve and I decided at like 2pm that I really wanted some private time in my bedroom. Like, time was a-wastin'.. Problem was, my bedroom door didn't lock and my mother was home. Fortunately, mom was outside doing some yard work. Unfortunately, I was a fucking idiot and decided the best way to deter her from walking in on me would be to go find her in the yard and announce to her just how very incredibly tired I was, and how important it was that I take a nap right at this instant, and how it would be best that she not come into my room and disturb me from my slumber so that I may enjoy this important time of sanctuary.

Fortunately, mom didn't walk in on me jerking off, but I remember her expression incredibly well.

Kinda happened to me but for a cartoon that I was kinda embarrassed to watch at that time. So I went into my bedroom and my mom invaded my privacy. Kinda trashy now that I remember it

it's the same type of non-performative speech you see when any company says "we value our customer's complaints", or "we work hard to have a diverse and inclusive team", as if by merely saying these things that it magically becomes true

ah but meta has cracked it this time; if they just say "we never sell your info" that means they don't, right?

[-] Jajcus@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

We don't want our data being sold, because someone could buy it, collect with data from other sources and then abuse it in a way that hurt us or someone else.

It may be true that Meta does not sell our data... but it is the entity collecting and abusing our data.

"yeah we don't sell your data to anyone ^cause^ ^we're^ ^the^ ^ones^ ^buying^ ^it^"
