If you look at your library it shows you what they currently use and you can even set which you want as default.
So the easiest way to find out, would be to check that way

yeah, can't say that this is the case. Since the Metadata Agent would be responsible for requesting and adding metadata to your library items it would be set to the Official Plex Metadata Agents, since this is specifically for Movie Artworks, this would then only apply to the Plex Movie Metadata Agent.
But nowhere is any mention of where that metadata is coming from. Since I already wrote my own Metadata Agent and have some experience with it I know that the metadata is coming from watch.plex.tv as the metadata aggregator. I also know that movie-related Metadata is coming from TheMovieDB or IMDB.
You can specifically define that you want metadata from any of the sources if your "force match" the related source through the {tvdb-110381} on your folders. But not in the agent settings itself.
For TV Shows this is somewhat different because you can specifically select the Episode ordering to either TVDB or TMDB. By default, and from my tests, everything is coming from TheMovieDB unless otherwise specified.

But, again, the point is to make this more clear what the origin is because I have had multiple instances in which I had to do some detective work telling a user where that incorrect metadata is coming from because all they see is some wrong metadata in their library that someone maliciously changed on on TVDB, IMDB or TMDB.

Theposterdb has stated they needed to transition their payment provider, and it didn't make sense to keep incurring costs until that was complete. The reason is right out in the open.
I think you might have misread it or miss interpreted interpreted that. I took OP to be musing if PosterDB going down and therefore not being a source of posters has driven Plex to move to a different way of doing it. Not, as I took from your post, that there was some hidden reason for PosterDB going down that's related to Plex.
Might be wrong on all of the above in all fairness but thought it worth a post.
The posterdb was never an automatic source for Plex. They pull from thetvdb/themoviedb. Sometimes there is overlap if someone has uploaded their posters to those sources, but often not.
You have to manually add the posters from the posterdb via link or uploading it to Plex yourself.

Per the linked thread, this is already rolling out but requires a refresh of metadata for it to actually pull in from the new source, so if you don't periodically refresh metadata, nothing will change. Additionally, any locked field (i.e. if you've changed it manually before) won't be updated, so any manually assigned posters will remain the same.
I've already done the refresh on my library and I think I only had 2 or 3 posters that I really didn't like and overall I actually prefer the new source. Not all changes are necessarily bad changes...
You know what would be a not-bad change? A global lock button, or simply allowing you to lock items which are correct (but which you have not manually changed - what a dumb fucking rule that is). I just want Plex to stop fucking up stuff that is working - or at least give me a “don’t fuck my shit up” switch. Maybe they’ll release a premium - premium tier so that I can pay extra over my lifetime license to get them to stop fucking up my stuff…but I doubt it.
Too little too late. I have to go through and fix a lot of these manually because the media detection is complete gar-removed even when using their Naming Conventions.
