I still can't believe Sony is still in business. Who's dumb enough to keep buying stuff from a company that booby-trapped their own CDs?

If you read the article, they are no longer in the business of selling theatre projection equipment.

This was probably an expired certificate. Alamo Drafthouse, like many movie theatres, probably cuts costs by not having a projectionist and lets the projectors essentially run on auto pilot, and then faced the consequences when no one noticed that their certificates had expired.

Sorry to be unclear, I meant in general - so because they booby trapped their CDs, nobody should buy their anything, not just CDs and projectors.

Isnt Sony still the golden standard for tvs?

Not so much with OLED being a thing. They do make OLED TVs now, but they're just buying LG panels, so it comes down to is their image processing worth twice as much for the same screen.

Their industrial design is still top-tier throughout their portfolio though.

Alamo Drafthouse ... faced the consequences

I'm still blaming the assholes who put timebomb DRM in the movies in the first place.

Yeah it's crazy to think that a company like Sony makes more than just music.

[-] Jentu 18 points 10 months ago

Also interesting that Sony makes more money selling insurance and banking in Japan than they do with their music globally.

They're pushing the boundaries on where to put malware!

Sorry but the booby-trapped their CDs? Could you explain further? I was not able to find out what you meant with a quick google search.

[-] morbidcactus@lemmy.ca 27 points 10 months ago

Back in the mid 00's their CDs had a rootkit on them that installed software to interfere with CD Copying apparently also some of them phoned home with your listening habits. Stuff was hard if not impossible to remove, used system resources, crashed computers and was a security hole, just plain shity

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

IIRC, it became widely known that Sony was doing this after malware exploiting it became widespread enough to be noticed.

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 5 points 10 months ago

Sony has the worst cybersecurity I've seen. Hackers are constantly running wild on them
