If you like OpenArena, check out Xonotic. Its a similarly fast paced open source shooter.

I enjoy warfork, also a fork of quake.

streamlines a lot of the movement mechanics, makes the game very fast.

warfork.. i never heard about that one, i might check that one out aswell

This video is a really good overview of the movement of warfork, it can be extremely fast.

[-] NetherFalcon 2 points 11 months ago

GOD DAMN the movement is fast, the video wasn't wrong lmaoo

Yeah, it's a well known fork of Quake III Arena. It's good.

[-] NetherFalcon 2 points 11 months ago

it's a pretty nice fork, hopefully it gets more people though which would be nice. i also love how since it's a fork of quake 3 arena, it has that nice old school feel to it

People are not that much into FPS nowadays... or so I've gathered. Plus it's a really fast reaction game, people aren't used to that. You have to be really really fast.

Maybe I'm wrong, IDK, I haven't played it in a while, or the original QIII Arena, but back in the day, finding players online for it was a problem as well. It was just too fast for most people.

oh yeah that's true.. not many people i've seen today really play fps games much anymore, though meanwhile i'm over here playing half life deathmatch or cs 1.6/cs source servers (those games still have alive servers somehow), honestly i kinda wonder if fps games will be as popular as it was back then

[-] 0x4E4F@infosec.pub 2 points 11 months ago

I doubt it, but we'll see.

People are into stories now, some FPS games have good stories, but not all. It's mostly RPG nowadays that takes a huge slice of the cake. Plus a lot of play on their phones, and you can't really play FPS games on a phone, a mouse and a keyboard is absolutely necessary for that.

[-] NetherFalcon 2 points 11 months ago

yeaaah fps games on mobile feels.. sucky, playing such a genre with a touch screen feels wrong in many ways. a mouse and keyboard just feels like the right way to play an fps game

IDK where things stand regarding VR and FPS games... maybe it'll gap the bridge, make them popular again.

[-] NetherFalcon 2 points 11 months ago

vr and fps games does sound like a cool combination tbh

I Loved those kind of shooter back in the day on lan partys. But nowadays everyone only plays through internet and my ping is way to high for such fast games. 😢

[-] NetherFalcon 3 points 11 months ago

god i wish i could've experienced a lan party, shit looks amazing

[-] Dequei@sopuli.xyz 4 points 11 months ago

Yeah, i played it a lot when i was a kid

[-] NetherFalcon 2 points 11 months ago

i've only just now discovered it and i'm actually loving it

[-] Bene7rddso@feddit.de 3 points 11 months ago

I'm playing Cube2:Sauerbraten sometimes. It's a fast paced FPS, runs on a potato, and most of the time there's someone online, and if not there's always the bots on Venice

[-] NetherFalcon 1 points 11 months ago

i looked at it's trailer and GOD DAMN it looks amazing
