Israel has rebuffed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's call for a "humanitarian pause" in Gaza.

Mr Blinken said he had discussed the idea with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials during their talks in Tel Aviv.

But in a TV statement minutes later, Mr Netanyahu said Israel rejected "a temporary ceasefire that does not include the release of our hostages".

He said that Israel was "continuing with all our force" against Hamas.

Honestly, it's hard to imagine that the aid we give to the Middle East wouldn't be better spent in the Caribbean and in Central America.

[-] xenomor@lemmy.world 28 points 10 months ago

If the Biden administration really wanted this, they wouldn’t ‘call for’ it. They would demand it and coerce those fascist fucks to comply. This is theater. It provides Biden a talking point to claim that he isn’t quite as ghoulish as a few Americans are starting to realize that he is.

All hamas has to do is release 200 hostages. Seems very simple to do.

[-] Maalus@lemmy.world 23 points 10 months ago

All israel has to do is stop bombing civillians. Seems very simple to do.

[-] Pasta4u@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Doesn't get their people back. Doesn't stop hamas from attacking them.

So what does Israel stopping the bombing actually achieve? More years of terror inflicted upon the people of Israel from hamas?

[-] filister@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago

You realise that once this is over Hamas would have a really easy time finding new recruits. You don't really expect all those people pushed to the brink won't radicalize, do you?

And then what? Do you seriously think that leveling everything around including civilian infrastructure and in the process killing and injuring tens of thousands is the solution?

So what does Israel stopping the bombing actually achieve?

Less years of terror inflicted upon the people of Gaza from Israel.

IMO Israel should also stop targeting journalists

[-] Pasta4u@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Until hamas attacks Israel again and then Israel attacks again.

If hamas didn't invade and attack innocent people at the start of October then Israel wouldn't be bombing them right now.

[-] Zippit@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Talk, negotiate, turn their own people on them by giving them basic human rights and treating them like real humans instead of what you've been doing to them for decades.

And maybe stop killing peacemakers, remember the photo of Rabin and Arafat shaking hands? That day gave us all so much hope. That was the right way to go instead of giving in to your own terrorist settlers and asshole Netanyahu.

Oh, and take a look at how Ukraine is winning public opinion and the war just by being decent, treating their prisoners of war justly, keeping civilian casualties at a minimum, not killing journalists, not start a disinformation campaign, ...

[-] Pasta4u@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Isreal already handed back Gaza. Then Gaza voted in hamas.

Ukraine is wasting other nations money esp the usa. No aid should be given for war.

[-] rambaroo@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Israel supported Hamas. Funny how you genocidal liars always leave that out.

[-] Zippit@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

All I read in the Israeli media is that basically Israel has given up on the hostages. And from Hamas' standpoint, the smart thing to do is to hold on to those hostages for life, because the minute they let them all go, it will be a complete genocide.

You forgot that you have to give the enemy a way out if you want the hostages back. Right now they have nothing to lose and every man, woman and child Israel kills is in their advantage. They may lose their lives, but their lives weren't worth living anyway the way you treated them for generations...but Israel will lose everything in the end and they still can't see it.

You already lost.

[-] Pasta4u@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

The smart thing that hamas could have done is never attack.

Israel is never going to free hundreds of terrorists to get the hostages back because it will only embolden hamas. The only way fir Isreal to stop hamas is to eradicate it

Note that Biden and his administration are changing their tone, only AFTER major backlash from the Muslim community, the UN, EU and all the demonstrations going on. Turkey just cut ties with Netanyahu, yes everybody shits on Turkey, but at least they know how to give a signal.

*"Netanyahu is no longer someone we can talk to. We have written him off," Turkish media quoted Erdogan as saying.

Erdogan's remarks came a week after Israel said it was "re-evaluating" its relations with Ankara because of Turkey's increasingly heated rhetoric about the Israel-Hamas war.* Like, you know everyone has a right to an opinion?

Kids are dying every minute and all Biden can come up with is a plan to fight Islamaphobia? Bitch we don't need your plan, every minority group has learned to survive without you.

The world has changed, no one's buying this shit anymore. There is no fucking way Israel will come out of this war as a victor. Starving people to death, cutting off water, displacing them and then bombing them indiscriminately to death even before setting one foot on the ground and then claim victory? History will know them forever as the cowards they are. Not 'smart' but cowards.

Wouldn't surprise me if Biden threw a few aliens at us at this point to distract us from what's going on.

The only thing he can do now, is to pack up his warships or hell, just even threaten to pack up, to let Israel see how serious he is and STOP Vetoing UN humanitarian aid resolutions.

[-] cyd@lemmy.world 22 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Israel knows that the US will back it up no matter what, so it doesn't have to listen.

Blinken also knows that Israel knows. The US calls for humanitarian aid, etc, are public theatre designed to be rebuffed by Israel without consequences. So Biden gets to show the world that he is very concerned over human rights, even as Israel flattens Gaza.

[-] GreatFord@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

Between the unflinching support of the US, the world doing nothing to stop genocide across the globe, and the lack of any consequence for nuclear powers, they know they have basically carte blanche.

[-] SuddenDownpour@sh.itjust.works 18 points 10 months ago

If Western countries actually cared for human rights, they'd be blockading Israel right now until they agreed to stop the indiscriminate harm towards civilians. US politicians are asking for the bare minimum, and even that is far too much for Israel. It cannot be explained by anything other than bloodlust.

[-] tictac2@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago

“Thanks for the money, now stfu”

[-] Nobody@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

Qatar might be able to work out a deal to release a handful of hostages for a temporary ceasefire. Give Gaza time to get clean water, food, evacuate the wounded, and most importantly get both sides talking.

[-] mwguy@infosec.pub 5 points 10 months ago

I'm pretty sure Hamas has flatly denied the possibility of hostage release.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 12 points 10 months ago

What? Hamas is waiting for negotiations for hostage release. It's Israel that refused. Oh, and also, they've already released some of them, though not a lot.

[-] mwguy@infosec.pub 5 points 10 months ago

My understanding is that Hamas wants concessions in return for a hostage release. Israel isn't interested in that.

[-] TheDankHold@kbin.social 6 points 10 months ago

Which is what they said. Israel refused negotiations.

[-] mwguy@infosec.pub 2 points 10 months ago

That's not refusing negotiations. Hamas wants a ceasefire. Israel wanta it's hostages. That's peanutbutter meet jelly. They're both negotiating they just might not be willing to budge enough to find common ground.

[-] emax_gomax@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Last I heard hamas wanted a hostage trade (for hamas terrorists). Although Israel unwillingness to comply seems to me less like playing hard ball and more trying to save face after letting hamas attack and take their people.

[-] mwguy@infosec.pub 2 points 10 months ago

The last time they traded terrorists for civilians those terrorists were used to conduct a slave raid against their people.

[-] Fades@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

Hubris

Biden, I know it will never happen given the relationship between the two nations but maybe give sanctions a thought

Palestinians really fucked themselves when they voted for Hamas in 2006

[-] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Yeah, 40% of them…. 20 fucking years ago. They all deserve to die I guess for that mistake, especially all the people who weren’t even alive or old enough to vote. They definitely should’ve thought twice about voting for Hamas.

I know that if America ever chose a president that lost the popular vote and then refused to leave office and then sparked a conflict with a more powerful country, all Americans would definitely deserve to die in that conflict and all future conflicts with that country for the rest of time, even if they didn’t vote for that president. Even if their parents and grandparents didn’t vote for that president.

[-] itscozydownhere@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Never said they deserve it now. Just contemplating.

[-] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago

I can’t even. Justifying ethnic cleansing. Sad.

The majority of the current Palestinian population was not even born in 2006, so I don't see how a vote then is really relevant. Hamas, like many others around the world, has edged to authoritarian rule, and given the internal divisions preceding this conflict, Israeli citizens are equally concerned the current government there is also trundling down the same path.

[-] itscozydownhere@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Yeah I completely agree. That was kinda my point, so much similarities

[-] ShroOmeric@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago

By that idea every german should have died because they voted for Hitler. And every Israeli should die because they voted Bibi. You don't spend too much time thinking, do you?

[-] itscozydownhere@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Oh obviously not and I don’t blame anyone. Was just an observation. Nationalists parties ALWAYS suck

[-] autotldr@lemmings.world 2 points 10 months ago

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Mr Blinken said he had discussed the idea with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials during their talks in Tel Aviv.

The US diplomatic effort came as Israel pressed its offensive against Hamas, with commanders saying that their forces had encircled Gaza City and were engaged in a "complex urban fight".

In his visit to the country, Mr Blinken offered a message of continued US support and sought assurances that Israel would take "concrete steps" to protect Palestinian civilians.

Mr Blinken, on his second trip to the region in a month, said the US had provided Israel advice on how to minimise civilian deaths while still trying to "finish" Hamas.

In comments made at a news conference beside the Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Mr Blinken said the US stood "strongly with Israel it has the right and obligation to defend itself and to ensure the events of 7 October never happen again."

Mr Herzog said Israel was going to great lengths to warn Gazans of airstrikes, as he held up a pamphlet that he said was being dropped in the Strip telling civilians to leave the war zone in the north.

More often than not I see one comment on a post and am looking forward to read it only to discover it's a bot comment which I'm never interested in reading. If I'd be interested in TLDR's of articles I'd just install some browser extension for it.

At least I'd hope that comments marked as made by bots would not count into the comment count.

[-] filister@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

I find the TLDR bot really helpful!

Probably something to ask the Lemmy devs.
