I have family from this region, it's considered Poland's Bible belt. It's also propped up by tourism. Maybe a lot of Europeans could boycott this area? Ironically, a lot of tourists come from Middle East countries which may agree with this mayor's take. Even though Middle Eastern tourists are controversial in this region. It's a very interesting dynamic going on.
Tourists are generally oblivious and view the places they visit as scenery for them to enjoy. I don't think there's ever been a tourist boycott of any place for any reason.
Canadians boycotting USA right now and there is somewhat of an impact.... That's just one recent example. You're probably right that it won't change much.

Tourists don't generally care about domestic issues such as this, unless theres a genocide or civil war going on, most people dont care.

I haven't been to the very Southeastern corner yet. My opinion of it is that it is poverty stricken, also hard to get via public transportation.
it's one of these places where nobody wants to live including locals. the ones that do also live from tourism (and forestry/farming)
The mountain hiking is awesome. I wouldn't say I would love to live there but I visit often to go hike.
It's awesome if you're a tourist. hardly a local phenomenon, farming and forestry got professionalized, less people can get jobs in these sectors, people move out, there's not enough traffic to sustain other businesses and you get dying villages filled with stubborn retirees
Though I understand what you're saying, I wouldn't say farming is a "job" here. My family, as recently as the 90s, would literally supplement their livelihood by living off the land. The cattle, crop was to survive off of. The community would help each other with harvest. I wouldn't say the villages are dying, instead they are being commercialized. The villages were dying in the 90s when people were moving out of Poland. Now there is an actual real estate market, in the 90s few would by a home in one of the valleys around zakopane. Just my opinion, not a fact since afterall my family were one of many to GTFO of Poland for a "better life".
i come from a bit flatter place and yeah farming used to be something done by about everyone as a side job, but while most of land around village, population 500, was also owned by about everyone, now 3/4 of it is owned by maybe 4 families who are actual, professional farmers who do actual, industrial farming. (this really kicked off when farmers could get loans for new machinery, and with EU money influx) other than another handful of people who work within village, and retirees, everyone else commutes to and works in bigger towns around, and some moved abroad entirely. this is how it looked in 00s, and from there it can go in two directions: when there's not enough people around, all of these tiny shops in villages close and people eventually move out, or some people open other small businesses where they live and situation stabilizes sort of. but also independent from that, some people who get specialized degrees don't come back but instead stay in cities where they got it, because there are no jobs they're qualified for there. there are villages where places like hairdressers or various kinds of workshops open up and people stay and live there and there are villages where there are no births in entire year, because everyone under 30 moved out
This same type of thing happens here in the United States. The amount of small towns that have been absolutely destroyed due to "corporate farming" is high. Most small town in the USA have been hurt by these industrial farming practices. Although let's not forget, my parents hated being forced to farm to survive. They dreamed of just having a job and some free time without needing to toil in the fields. So the question is, was joining the EU and ending up in these positions better for the people of Poland?

closer to 20%, and about as many as opposed EU accesion in the first place. PiS barks a lot but doesn't want to actually quit because this would eviscerate their support base that does depend on EU funding, like farmers but not only them
I still have family that lives in the zakopane area. When I talk to them the stuff they say reminds me of trump supporters in USA. Very conspiratorial and I can't reason with them because they use Facebook sources. Also polling always undercounts these types of people... Once again look at USA. Just my 2 cents but things are getting weird there in Poland.

Well Poland has progressed greatly, but you did mention that small villages are struggling greatly with the policies since EU integration. Obviously things aren't as rosy as the economic numbers suggest for Poland since there is a portion of the population that feels left behind

It's hilarious because zakopane is a huge tourist spot. Ironically, a lot of the tourists come from Muslim countries that might find the mayor's politics more agreeable than the rest of Europe. 😂

Sure can. Plenty of local governments receive EU funding, but it will take time

Though this is awesome, this will further create division in Poland with the movement to leave the EU. I hope the people of Poland aren't that stupid, but boy do my fellow countrypeeps sometimes disappoint me
