A woman is dead after being hit by a car which then crashed into lunchtime diners at a shopping centre in Melbourne's east.
Police said the 27-year-old woman was walking across a pedestrian crossing at Westfield Knox when she was hit about 12:45pm.

I had a look at the intersection on google maps street view and from what I can see there used to be very basic and rudimentary lights before June of 2026, but none after, and then only stop signs. Crazy for such a huge crossing.. My European mind can't comprehend it.
And even then, my European mind just goes "if you're driving and someone is even thinking of crossing the crossroad, you stop for them".
that might be Nederland mind (assumption from the .nl), I can assure you it's not usually the case in France for example, I have to force my way on the cross path to remind the drivers about the rules

I'm jealous of your safety culture. I walk my 3 month old around my neighborhood in los Angeles. The intersection right outside my apartment has a 5 lane road (2 lanes each direction and a turning lane in the middle). Cars will turn haphazardly from the left lanes when turning right or vice versa. They never use turn signals nor check for pedestrians, the police refuse to do anything saying pedestrian must be aware of their surroundings. We truly live in an evil unwalkable environment here in the states.
I always make eye-contact, smirk and shake my head when crossing at a light when one of those gargantuan behemoths is in front of me. It's not much, but it's honest work (if not slightly risky).
One day i was at a gas station and some ridiculously bug truck just oeeled out. They are not very common here at all thankfully. He put the pedal ro the floor and made a ridiculous noise. I never quite know what they think this looks like for bystanders, so my first impulse was to piont and laugh. There was a roundabout near by and a few seconds later i heard that noise again. He came back and followed me into the gas station and asked me what's so funny. I was so confused about that level of insecurity or whatever you wanna call that. I shrugged and said i thought that's obvious. I thought he gained some self awareness and walked off, prdal to the floor again. I wasn't outside to point and laugh again, but it would've been funny.

All these types of collisions stories always use phrases like, "the vehicle hit" or "the truck/car/motorcycle collided with".
The finger point always somehow starts with the vehicle its self, never the operator behind the wheel, or anything to do with the surrounding infrastructure. It's always as if the driver themselves never existed.
To be fair, it probably is the vehicles fault. They have a child size blind spot right in front. Should be illegal
The driver probably chose to buy that specific vehicle with the additional danger it poses to everybody else.
If you buy and drive a vehicle with a design which makes it far more likely to not see and thus is more likely to kill children and people in wheelchairs, and which in general is almost twice as likely to kill pedestrians in a collision, then it's your fault when it does.
Yes, they definitely share the blame... But far less than the auto industry that is not only making increasingly big and dangerous cars, but also creating an arms race on the road
It was irresponsible to buy such a dangerous truck, but the buyer probably didn't recognize the scale of the danger. The salesman probably didn't demonstrate that feature. The manufacturer certainly knew, and yet despite growing demand for tiny trucks, they just keep making them bigger
It's a systematic issue, you can fault individuals for their part in it, but you can only solve the problem systematically
Personally I think that the highest blame is on those who are supposed to regulate it.
Even big-sized market actors like automakers aren't going to adjust their profit-seeking to avoid systemic issues like "arms race on the road" unless they're forced to: it is well known and more than proven in Economics that Negative Externalities like this (and like the most obvious example of a Negative Externality: Polution) are invariably created by market actors if it makes them more profit, unless they are actually forced otherwise by an external entity with more power than them.
If the Economic system is Capitalism, then don't be surprised when the capitalists optimize their actions for personal upsides, and as bigger car mean more profits automakers will carry only pushing them unless they're they're forced otherwise.

That said, this looks like the fault of another North-American trend – road blimps with blind spots that can conceal a møøse.
Now that you say it, I can't think of ever seeing an intersection like this. Either lights or a roundabout for this size.

I wasn‘t making a joke about the accident. But killing someone in a wheelchair should make more damage, than a bumper hanging down a little. Atleast I expected as much.
I bet that this is going to be one of those drivers who believe they own the road and who stops first goes first. You've seen the dashcams of drivers that double down when they clearly could've yielded.
