I just wonder. If you can openly carry a firearm. Could you not also openly carry a sword? Bow and arrow?

I do know that sometimes signs are banned from protests if they use sticks, because sticks can be used as melee weapons. Yet, your right to carry an M-16 in the streets--maybe even into congressional chambers during votes--is wholly protected.

It is completely stupid.

Use your gun as a stick them

It'll certainly get the point across

[-] cynar@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Could you use a long rifle as a stick for a protest sign?

What a weird damn country

Far as I know, as someone not in the land of the dumbfucks, each state has its own limitations on what they allow.
Some only allow specific calibers or length of blade.

Bows and arrows are usually classified as hunting utensils and may be fined as such if carried openly outside of permitted areas for hunting.

I can only assume it is required by the wearer to know the laws of their state in regards to this as the cops don't give a fuck and would rather just shoot you down.

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

This is the case. Some states would allow you a katana, or broad sword, others say only a pistol. I'm unsure about carrying and gun bigger than a pistol. But I've seen a guy at the grocery store with two pistols on his hips, with extra magazines.

[-] jdr@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 weeks ago

Surely they aren't so tyranical as to deny me a bayonet?

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Lol I'm pretty sure that'd be fine as long as it's on a musket.

Big IRON! BIG IRON!

[-] ReedReads@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 weeks ago

Probably.

I wonder if I can tow a trebuchet behind my Chevy Silverado.

[-] whaleross@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Launching children with automatic weapons over 300 meters.

[-] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Funny thing about that. Someone here in Sweden emailed the police if it was legal to own a trebuchet or if you needed a weapons liscense for it. (The police issue weapon licenses)

The response was that of course no one has ever tried, so there is no formal ruling. But crossbows require a weapons license while bows do not. Because the crossbow can store the energy. So leaning on that reasoning. It would probably require a license.

But I love that the question was asked to our police, and that they gave a serious and thorough answer.

So, technically. As long as you're not breaking any traffic related laws. It is not illegal to mount a trebuchet on a roadworthy wagon and tow it behind your car.

Ran into AI article hell trying to look this up.

https://knifeinformer.com/state-knife-laws/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_by_state

https://thelegalguide.org/constitutional-carry-knives-do-knife-laws-follow-gun-carry/

Does constitutional carry for firearms affect my ability to carry a knife? No. Knife laws operate independently of firearm carry laws. A state may allow permitless firearm carry while imposing strict knife restrictions, or vice versa.

https://thegunzone.com/can-you-open-carry-a-bow-and-arrow/

The legality of open carrying a bow and arrow varies dramatically. Some states have no laws specifically addressing the issue, meaning the practice is generally permitted unless prohibited by local ordinance. Other states might consider a drawn or easily accessible bow and arrow a concealed weapon if specific conditions are met, such as having the bow strung and an arrow nocked in a populated area.

[-] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

Interesting. Because i was just thinking, an arrow knocked but undrawn, how is that any different from having a gun in your holster, bullet in the chamber.

Knives i get, because of the concealment issue. But an actual sword worn on the hip in a scabard. It's not concealed. And I'd argue far less dangerous than a gun.

Not that rules or laws are under obligation to make sense, unfortunately.

[-] ITGuyLevi@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago

In Georgia they changed from a concealed firearm permit to a weapons license a while back. It removes a lot of the confusion.

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

I'm pretty sure there's still a difference between 'open carry' and 'brandishing a weapon'. So you probably could, as long as you didn't brandish it

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

In civilized countries none of those options are legal, open or not.
If any of those are legal where you live, I highly recommend you move somewhere else more civilized.

Edit:
Wow so people here find it OK in a civilized society to walk around in public with weapons meant for killing?
Just wow!!?? I never thought I'd see such disgusting insanity here?

[-] mote@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago

In the UK, a knife with a blade over 3" and/or any safety locking mechanism is illegal. This same extremely common knife is legal to carry (typical utility pocket knife) in a majority of other parts of the world.

[-] addie@feddit.uk 4 points 2 weeks ago

https://www.gov.uk/buying-carrying-knives

"Illegal without good reason." You are most definitely allowed to buy kitchen knives to take home with you; trying to take them into a football game will be frowned upon, though.

Police are usually fairly sensible about it. I've got friends that do medieval reenactment that have been stopped with cars full of longswords and crossbows. Show them your event tickets and some of your other gear, you'll be waved on your way.

A three-inch blade is allowed provided it doesn't lock in place; as long as it just folds away (like a swiss army knife) then it's fine. Three-inch butterfly knife will get you in a lot of bother, though.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

How do you buy kitchen knives without becoming a felon?

[-] addie@feddit.uk 2 points 2 weeks ago

It isn't a problem; mote has misunderstood the law.

[-] mote@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

mote absolutely understands the law, addie is creating and moving goalposts to support their tirade. The person I was responding to made a ludicrous statement, to which I refuted with observable evidence (laws).

It is obvious to any reasonable person I was referring to and talking about the common folding pocket knife, not kitchen knives or other fixed bladed implements. I may not have written "folding" and it was implied, that could have been better. Your choice to move to some other mental place to complain is your choice, not mine.

But let's get to the meat of your off-kilter tirade - what I have stated and am referring to is an anomaly in the world of knives; the locking mechanisms (there are several designs) on a 3" folding pocket knife is there for user safety. If you have owned and operated pocket knives under force, they can and will twist in your hand. And without a locking mechanism, they can and will snap shut on your fingers and slice you up. I know this personally. It fucking hurts.

I am very aware the UK has banned such an object because they believe it will curtail knife violence. I feel this is trading an actual proven safety feature for "feel good" nanny law that probably don't matter to someone intent on committing knife violence. It only harms the honest user of the pocket knife who wishes to not mutilate their fingers.

A three-inch blade is allowed provided it doesn’t lock in place; as long as it just folds away (like a swiss army knife) then it’s fine. Three-inch butterfly knife will get you in a lot of bother, though.

You go from from a nice pocket knife to a fucking butterfly knife, like holy shit there's an entire world of cutlery between those two and you jump to some crazy extreme with butterfly knives. Those knives are actually curtailed by laws of their own (switchblades, butterfly knives and other "assisted open" cutlery is vastly illegal in many places in the world) as they tend to overlap with gang violence laws ("public nuisance" in the legal chapters). This is not the same mechanisms or designs as safety locks on a folding pocket knife used by regular people doing regular things.

The UK outlaws the safety knife (it's designed for cutting seat belts, smashing a car window and other save your life things) I keep in my vehicle next to a flashlight, because it's longer than 3" and has a locking mechanism. You are not using this thing for knife violence. (search "spyderco rescue knife") But, this tool is illegal in the UK because of it's features.

So yeah, I understand the law. But I also understand knives and cutlery as I'm interested in the steels used, so just happen to learn other things along the way. And to be fair, other countries have just as stupid laws about other things, including my own. I'm specifically discussing this one law and it's irrelevant it's the UK for purposes of discussion of the law itself banning a safety feature.

What part of "open carry states" confused you? I don't live in the US, not that it matters. I was curious about it.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

What in my post indicates any kind of confusion?

[-] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Because i specifically asked about open carry states. And you start talking about the "rest of the world".

We're not here to debate or discuss your personal opinions.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

you start talking about the “rest of the world”.

So you interpret civilized countries as the rest of the world?
Which was kind of the point, why the fuck are you interested in the stupid rules of a barbaric uncivilized psychopathic society?

We’re not here to debate or discuss your personal opinions.

Oh but we are here to answer your stupid questions?

[-] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Oh but we are here to answer your stupid questions?

Yes... that's the entire point of this community.

why the fuck are you interested in the stupid rules of a barbaric uncivilized psychopathic society?

Because knowledge and curiosity leads to personal development. You should try it.

It is a bit funny though that you hate the US this much but still use their spelling of words. 👌

Yes… that’s the entire point of this community.

I like that you showed up, acted like a complete cunt for literally no reason, and are now getting offended that people are calling you out for acting like a cunt.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Because people being obsessed with weapons is OK to you?
And I'm the cunt for being against a culture that promotes school shootings. 🤢 🤮

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

You're a cunt for being obnoxious about your opinion in a thread not at all related to or inviting your opinion.

No one asked about or is talking about school shootings or the necessity of weapons. You brought it up for no reason. If you want to have that discussion, go to a thread where people are seeking that discussion. Bringing it up here makes you an annoying asshole.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I certainly did not invite your opinion either, so how are you not obnoxious yourself?

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

Lol so you want to be an asshole uninvited, but not have anyone else do it to you? You can't have it both ways

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

No you are confused, it's you who is trying to have it both ways.
You are complaining that I'm an uninvited asshole, and then you are an even bigger uninvited asshole yourself.
I just stated as a fact that I did no invite you to respond to my post either.

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

Wow, you really don't get it. Bye.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Nonono please explain to me how I'm not allowed to be an asshole but you are?
How it is not a double standard on your part, but me that misunderstand something.
