Kind of tangentially related to the tweet, but who thought it was a good idea to teach kids to associate sharing with punishment?

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I think it's because they don't just want one or several kids eating. It's distracting and the kids will get all whiny and fight. It's the teacher's job to teach them the subject and the parent's job to teach them to not be whiny and fighty.

Makes perfect sense to me, some things are best taught through punishment, I don't question this for a moment. And I could see that eating at the wrong time is something you want kids not to do. So, I completely agree with you.

But my question is not whether this should be punished at all, it's about which genius thought that sharing would be a good idea for a punishment. There's a million and a half different kinds of punishments the teacher could choose from, and they often choose "sharing" as the punishment, teaching kids to associate sharing with punishment. I don't care to question that punishment is in order, I just care about the kind of punishment that is often chosen.

It's not a punishment, or intended to teach anything outside the subject of the class, so I don't see how we do agree. It's just a rule that a subset of the class can't be eating, to prevent disruption.

How does this associate sharing with punishment?

[-] isleepinahammock 2 points 1 day ago

Literal Pavlovian conditioning.

[-] bazelgeuse@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 days ago

By threatening to make them share as a punishment for eating in class.

so you're the person everyone is so afraid of handing out drugs to kids

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 38 points 3 days ago

Usually when someone is handing out free drugs you take as much as they'll let you because that shit is expensive.

[-] Stern@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Hence why they started D.A.R.E.

Drugs Are Really Expensive.

I mean LSD is not addictive and all but isn't that a thing so that you get addicted and buy more? I guess it kinda depends on the context and place tho idk.

Get addicted and buy more?

No it's so you figure out drugs are awesome and you want more there's no addiction required.

[-] Untamed_Star 1 points 2 days ago

I don't know if that's serious but like either addicted or not, if you consume addictive substances regularly you are almost certain to get addicted. That's not even only for drugs it is also like a lot of the coffee, food, alcohol and more industries (with sugar addiction and all) (They are just less addictive and more normalized). A lot of other addictive activities too not only even substances.

Nah I do coke all the time like four or five days a week and I’m not addicted.

A power move would be to answer "get your own candy, you're an adult".

[-] nomy@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago

I remember lots of kids bringing bags of candy for the class on seemingly random days. I liked to bring blow pops cause it's candy and gum. Surely my school wasn't the only one like that.

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

in my primary school, kids brought in candy on their birthdays

[-] Zorque@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago
