My own voice. But not in the I hate my voice type of way. Ever been on a phone call where you are being echoed? That disruption voice phenomenon. I hate that.
Agreed! I become incapable of speaking and just get horribly confused. You reminded me though, Benn Jordan did an interesting video on this concept.
Any form of expanded polystyrene rubbing/scratching against something. It is physically painful for me to listen to.
Touching EPS induces the same response in me.
Any type of felt-tip marker on paper/cardboard is also extremely stressful and unpleasant for me.
- Babies crying.
- Children shouting/chattering/being noisy
- Screeching of cutlery against a plate.
- Screeching of chalk against a blackboard.
- The dull throbbing sound of friction when something semi-moist rubs against glass, like when cleaning windows under certain conditions for example.
- Certain people's chewing noises (it is very person-dependant, some I don't even think about and some almost send me into meltdown).
- Most phone alerts.
- Irregular snoring.
Snoring of any kind makes me intensely furious. I want to smash their face repeatedly with a hammer while screaming at them to shut the fuck up. Same goes for loud chewing, doesn't even have to be open-mouthed.
screetching chalk/cutlery over chalkboards/plates
Loud, erratic noises. Sudden loud laughter. Building noise. (unnecessarily) loud car. People talking at different volumes.
Everything destroys the flow in my head.
Tiny pebble caught under the door being dragged over a stone floor. Like chalk on blackboard, just way worse.
People chewing and swallowing.
Phones that keep ringing.
Stuff being dropped in a quiet room.
Loud vehicle exhausts (this has become more annoying as I've started driving an ev.)
Dogs that keep barking for hours.
Yup i hate the dog barking. i love our dogs but they wont shut the fuck up. they lose there shit if a dog is outside
The sound of people eating or screaming kids. Also loud scooters. And don't even get me started on people who call on speaker in public...
High speed motors..... the vacuum cleaner, server fans etc
Any sound can be, if it's played through in-ear earphones. It can even be made worse when played through low quality/cheap/older generation ones. It's like getting stabbed in the ear by a screwdriver. It will automatically trigger fight or flight effect and i need to get those out.
I also cannot use in-ear earphones, but because it feels really unnatural. I hate earbuds and earplugs too. Nothing goes in my ear holes 👂 ❌
Yeah, earpuds as well. Though not earplugs, so just playing sound in or too close to the ear canal rather than something in it. Earplugs are just uncomfortable, but I'm wearing those only after night shift so tired enough not to notice it.
If there is a hell, there are screaming babies and leafblowers everywhere.
Ripping paper, the beeps of cash registers, clocks, lawn movers, and power tools and vacuums as well
I mean, I honestly could keep going for a while =w=
I forgot cash registers, that one is up there for sure.
Rubber scraping against itself is I think the absolute worst one.
Over the years I've started to hate cheap phone chargers less.
Hook and Loop straps. It makes my jaw hurt and my teeth buzz?. Like why?
Anything really high pitch and loud. Terrible combo for me. So suqeaky breaks are a no go. Also, whenever I get random ringing in my ears, it's annoying as all bet. But it's even worse the very rare time it goes on for extended periods of time.
Chalk on chalkboards and some pencils are horrible. Also high-pitched drills, like dentists' drills. That one might be linked to trauma.
Velcro and, in the words of OP, people practically smashing plates while violently washing dishes.
I am also quite sensitive to shouting, but it's less of an "urrgh that's awful" and more of an "I need to leave right now before someone gets hurt" deal.
Knocking on doors. Small children screaming. Default, uninterrupted, and lengthy ringtones on a boomers phone as they stare at the screen like a mole seeing the sun for the first time.
-
High pitched brass/string instruments
-
Corrugated cardboard rubbing against itself
-
Dull non-mechanical pencils on paper
-
Machine guns/explosions (war-heavy video games come to mind)

Ads. I can’t explain it but just ads, period.
That’s off top of my head but I could probably come up with 20 more lol
Oh yeah ads are horrible…
Actually, a pro tip I discovered years ago, when live TV was the thing, and you had so so many unskippable ads. Either cut the sound or the visuals. Mute the TV during ad breaks is the easiest solution, it makes it much less overwhelming (buy now buy now buy now!!!). If you can't do that, try closing your eyes. I found that reducing sensory input by 50% really made it much more tolerable!
Ads just piss me off ldk. especially 60 second Unskippible ads on YouTube.
People talking over each other. Crying babies. Barking Dogs.
Rubbing carpet. I can basically taste it I hate it so much lol. If i need to rub something out of the carpet I need to put on headphones
Ok, I forgot about this one. Seconded to "tasting" bad textures. It's like I hate the texture of cheap carpet so much, I feel it with my entire body when I touch / hear it. The feeling of scraping your socks by accident on carpet… it's so dry and horrible. I just get someone else to do the carpet rubbing lol
Nice carpet I don't have this problem though, only the cheap stuff
Balloon popping, thunder, fireworks, and gunshots are up there for me. Anything sudden and loud really but those in particular I’m vigilant of. Can’t really watch live action movies because of it, at least not in theatres. Requires a lot of pausing a scene, pacing around a bit before unpausing or just letting it play while I stim until it’s over. I’m more prone to unhealthy stims with noises like this.
Open mouth chewing or people with powerful jaws chewing is uncomfortable. Power chewing makes me feel like I’m going to get eaten. My hair stands on end and I get really fight or flighty. As a kid peers would chew in my face since I was so reactive to it and that definitely made it worse. I’ve given someone a black eye from aggressively spasming when they did it to tease me playfully so its one of those disclaimers I’m pretty quick to spout off from the “Don’t do this or we will guaranteed have a bad time” list.
Otherwise random noises can be highly upsetting for no reason I can discern then be completely fine later.
I also need to know what caused a sound and will openly question where it came from until I figure it out or someone tells me. I wouldn’t say it’s an irritating experience, more of maybe… somewhere in the realm of mild to moderate curiousity and anxiety.
Yeah I have my own share of unhealthy stims for stressful situations… also seconded for having to know what caused a noise. Thankfully I'm pretty good at identifying sounds at this point, but the occasional investigation still occurs
Coughing, and strangely enough, the sound of a drink pouring into a glass. Like, imagine the over exaggerated glug glug glug you'd hear as foley work in a show or radio ad. The coughing I can explain easily but the pouring is baffling even to me but it just pisses me off to no end.
I have misophonia very bad and my triggers are many things like: gum popping, gum smacking, foot tapping, loud atonal whistling, and pretty much any noise emitted by humans that is completely unnecessary and just exists to make noise.
Also the first alarm default (I think it's called Morning or Sunshine or something) on Android phones because of a coworker I used to have that would have that alarm set to check her blood sugar and when it would go off, she would just ignore it and for 20 minutes or more it would just keep going LOUDLY and NONSTOP.
My coworker now has this same alarm that goes off every time breaks start and he does not know (or doesn't care) to completely shut it off, he just snoozes it so it keeps going off every ten minutes.
Mildly upsetting or startling sounds are slamming doors and yelling, due to PTSD.
When 2 pieces of styrofoam rub on each other. Just imagining it makes me feel unpleasant.
Construction equipment (both personal and industrial) freaks me out so badly I become a blubbering mess.
Loud vibrations caused by large vehicles is another. The low rumbling of the vehicle, the low bumping bass from the loud music... or grating of metal scraping across cement... nightmare city.
And, when someone raises their voice. Whether out of personal frustration or otherwise. But I suppose anger venting either with or without moving things noisily as well.
People talking on the other side of a wall. Built a whole life around avoid that possibility 🙃
