Most definitely not (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Just something that has bothered me for a long time. I mean, I know that the YouTube algorithm has been shit even before the inclusion of AI, but now that they apparently use it, let’s be honest: our feeds are now more crammed full of shit than a sewer.

If the algorithm was shit before AI and its shit after AI, maybe the issue isn’t AI, but the mega corp running the whole thing.

YouTube is like a casino that they are learning how to build as they go. Every light bell and whistle they try to cram in is to get you to keep the tab open longer. AI didn’t enlighten them to profit, this is how it’s always been. They will happily throw recommendations at the wall and see what sticks especially if it helps them train the algorithm to make more stick.

You have a point: part of the problem is undoubtedly the hands behind the scenes, but I do think AI is also partly responsible for the increase in shit on the platform. It has definitely got worse since the inclusion of AI. Mega corps don’t directly select what gets put in your feed — AI does, if implemented in the algorithm. However, the people working the mega corps are the ones implementing/controlling these features.

But I agree: mega corps have a big hand in all this.

I think there are a few key positions on AI I’ve seen online.

The rabidly for AI think it’s an ends justify any means wundermachine that can solve any problem with enough compute. Even if I don’t agree, I understand these people, they’ll swim in any water they smell profit.

The mildly annoyed see that all these companies treat their users as the product and are happy to test and train the next attention grabber in anything and everything they’ve been using for free for 10 years.

The practical see that it’s not sustainable for the planet to continue maximum compute manufacturing and the power to run it. The Industrial Revolution has already leveraged much of the planets health for human advancement, we can’t continue this practice forever without dire consequences.

Which leaves the rabidly against AI. Some are luddites against the plow taking farmers jobs. Some go on about how AI pictures have no soul until they’re foaming at the mouth. The only common thread I’ve seen with them is that they are angry about something, and they will not be reasoned with until you figure out for them what they are angry about.

The recommended videos algorithm uses what it knows about you to arbitrarily pick out some videos you might click on. The megacorp picks which algorithm is used based on one thing: audience retention. They are the puppet masters, “the AI” has no sentience or responsibility, it is a plinko board that trys to hit the right bucket at the bottom. Decide what you are angry at, the people making the decisions or the sorting machine they built. Here’s a hint: If you get a mob together and you smash the sorting machine, the exact same people will still be making the decisions that matter.

I admit I probably am biased but that’s just coz AI fucked my life. I do try to be balanced on the issue as much as I can, though

Hence, why my community logo looks like this 👇

I don’t know your story, and I’m not trying to rag on you dude. But did AI fuck your life or did the person making the decisions that matter?

[-] TheAntiAiLeader 1 points 6 days ago

Both. The thing about AI freely distributed is: it’s the responsibility of the user to choose to use it, but let’s be honest; there’s all kinds of luring/advertising to make people use it. Not to mention the fact that had AI delightfully never existed, that choice would never have to be made in the first place.

I fully get you’re not trying to rag on me and I get what you’re saying, but what corporations are doing to people (the allure of AI) is equally sickening

My feed isn't because I don't have one. I turned my history off years ago. Fuck algorithms.

[-] EatMyPixelDust 1 points 1 week ago

Same, plus I use it through a 3rd party client anyway!

[-] TheAntiAiLeader 1 points 1 week ago

Why didn’t I think of that? 🤦‍♂️ that would have solved a lot of problems

[-] EatMyPixelDust 4 points 1 week ago

Not long before we can start calling it SlopTube....

[-] TheAntiAiLeader 3 points 1 week ago

Why aren’t we calling it that already?

[-] EatMyPixelDust 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Most of the videos are still produced by real people I guess, but the slop levels are definitely rising.

Oh undoubtedly

I hate ai. A lot. But honestly, my feed has gotten a lot better recently. I actually get recommended queer content snd low viewer count stuff now.

[-] slazer2au@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Let's he fair, recommendations were shit before 2021 so we can't blame specifically that on AI

[-] TheAntiAiLeader 2 points 1 week ago

Of course they were. But AI multiplied it x27

Welcome to the official Anti-AI Alliance (AAA)!

Welcome

My name is the Anti-AI Leader, and in case you haven’t guessed, I am the leader of this community for people as disgruntled and disillusioned with AI as I have become!

About

By joining the Anti-Ai Alliance, you are entering a space to freely express your true distain towards all things Artificial Intelligence (AI). And it’s not even exclusive to people who don’t use AI at all — users of AI are just as welcome to sign up and discuss the issues with AI in the world.

Rules and recommendations

Our only rule is to follow the very basic of the fediverse’s common rules (I.e. no spam, no porn, etc.) Other than that, you may post whatever you like, though we do strongly encourage you to keep the discussion focussed on distain for/the negative aspects of AI. Discussion on the (potential) positive aspects of AI are also welcome, but may be subject to scrutiny/open debate.

Many thanks and welcome, The Anti-AI Leader
