Yup, they actually get people to do that. Not me either but here we are.

[-] inari@piefed.zip 12 points 3 weeks ago

What's an ad?

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

I have a few friends that proudly say they pay for premium...

I love them, but I do think less of them when they say this.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Only on the webpage... without adblocker... so basically no protection.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 53 points 3 weeks ago

I don't pay and don't get ads either. Stop being a sucker. Yes, I am fine with them going bankrupt if everyone would do that.

[-] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 27 points 3 weeks ago

Fine with it? I'm waiting for it!

[-] DaedalousIlios@pawb.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

Agreed! I'll take it a step further that they need to face bankruptcy over this!

The problem is that even if everyone paid for YouTube's subscription, they'd raise the price, slash the features, and reintroduce ads unless you pay for an even more expensive tier. Just like Netflix.

Why? Because advertising companies will always be giving more money to YouTube than the users. The only thing paying YouTube gets you is the Sunk Cost fallacy.

[-] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Fair enough, but dont whine when Youtube circumvents adblockers and starts injecting ads directly into video streams. You did this.

I hate my government for forcing Imgur to be blocked :(

[-] schwifty_squanch@lemmy.ml 35 points 3 weeks ago

Next up, you pay a subscription AND you watch ads!

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago

Amazon: "hey, stop copying me!"

[-] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

What, like cable television?

[-] green_link@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

TV over the air had ads to pay for the TV shows and channels you watched because they couldn't really secure the signal they sent out. but also it wasn't really supposed to be secure in the first place. but TV production was expensive. so you got commercials, ads and sponsors when you watched.

then cable TV came about. cable TV was supposed to be ad free because you were paying. but then they would have had to fill in for segments when over the air TV was showing ads so instead of that they just showed the same ads and got paid for it. that's double dipping.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

This is already happening with imbedded ads from content creators.

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

Not to be that guy, but it's actually Companies pay the running cost of YouTube (plus a little bit of pocket money for the creators whose videos you watch) so you can watch free of charge, in exchange for this they get to show you a video. I don't like Google either and rob them of their income by using an adblocker. Though if nobody pays and nobody watches ads they might find even worse ways to pay the bills.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 16 points 3 weeks ago

The meme is talking about YouTube Premium who's main selling point is ad-free viewing

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Well, yeah. Companies pay youtube to show you ads on their platform; this lets youtube stay free for users while still being an unbelievably expensive operation (not debating the ethics just - that's how the funding works). As an alternative, youtube gives you the option of paying them directly to buy the space ads would normally have bid on, and then blank it out. They get a steady monthly revenue stream, even if it's less than they'd be making by selling that ad space, and you get no ads.

[-] ItsComplicated@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Need a tier for ad free, data collection free viewing.

[-] Vespair@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 weeks ago

Google wants to get paid thrice for YouTube. That's not okay.

I'll consider allowing ads when they stop harvesting and selling data - until then, that data is my payment.

They don't get to show ads, sell our data, and charge a subscription. I'm tired of paying twice for shit.

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah Google sucks, didn't want to defend them but the business model in general. Companies should not be allowed to sell data. Them collecting your data as part of their ad business is one thing, but selling it shouldn't be allowed imo.

[-] Vespair@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

This. If you want to collect analytics for in house decision making, merchandising, whatever, I say go for. But as soon as you start selling that data or the conclusions thereof, it becomes a currency, and if I'm paying that currency you better not be asking me for another.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 8 points 3 weeks ago

I rather pay for good entertainment than watch ads for bad entertainment.

No tf we don't. YouTube ReVanced, YouTube Morphe, uBlock Origin

[-] 666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

And sponsorblock.

[-] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

For some reason either morphe and revanced are stuttering for me recently

[-] 666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Same for me, revanced takes what feels like an entire minute or more before starting playback. And quality settings are not available. Is there a revanced community here on Lemmy?

[-] gh0stcassette 3 points 3 weeks ago

Force close the app and clear the cache, that fixes it for me.

Smart tube on my older Sony android tv

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 weeks ago

We pay YouTube not to shows ads, then youtubers imbed ads in videos. So we pay to watch ads.

[-] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 weeks ago

Sponsorblock my friend. It'll automatically skip embedded ads. https://sponsor.ajay.app/

[-] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

I mean

How do you expect Youtube to make money

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

Nope. My adblocker is free.

[-] green_link@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

not defending youtube or ads in general, but technically the ad companies don't pay unless the ad is viewed/served, or only pay depending on how much of the ad is viewed. they aren't double dipping like this is implying.

youtube is only getting paid if an ad is shown, and depending on the duration of the ad only for the duration of the ad that is shown to the end user. for like s skippable ad, for the first 30 seconds you can't skip they get paid for that 30 seconds, but if ithe ad is longer say a minute, but the skip button appears after 30 and you press the skip button youtube only gets paid for the 30seconds the ad was displayed. if you don't skip then they get paid for the amount of time the ad was shown.

if you pay for youtube premium, then they don't show ads, they don't get paid for ads not shown. but that's why you are giving them money. to compensate for the "lost revenue" they aren't getting from ads.

and for things like adblockers, the ads are not served therefore don't qualify for being billed and youtube doesn't get paid. and youtube pays channels based on performance of ads being displayed, and that's why a lot of channels have both ad spots and sponsor segments. that and youtube doesn't pay real good for ad revenue unless you are a huge channel.

and then sponsor block skips sponsor sections for you and some sponsors/channels don't care the contract was do a sponsor segment and those contracts are outside of youtube itself so youtube doesn't get paid for them, that's why there isn't a sponsor skip action when you pay for premium. but i fear sponsors will corrupt and start doing contracts where they track how many times a segment was viewed and pay out based on that metric too.

[-] Smoogs@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

During an ad break you need another ad break.

Ray(ad break)cons

Now that is some Quality content so worth the money.

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago
[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 3 weeks ago

people paying YOUTUBE subscriptions are pretty much suckered into it,

[-] arsCynic@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Meanwhile we can't pay for uBlock Origin because he won't let us: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Why-don't-you-accept-donations%3F.

[-] GalacticSushi 5 points 3 weeks ago
[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago

why pay ads when you can just block them? doesnt make sen to pay 10+$ for it, also i heard they want to increase the price and add in ads in the lower subscriptions anyways.

[-] Fredthefishlord 5 points 2 weeks ago

Because content isn't free to produce? Because I want to support creators and can't be half assed to donate to every individual random patron?

[-] Smoogs@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Also: "and this is who is sponsoring me to show my shit on YouTube"

My fave is when there's an ad break during an ad.

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Every day brings us closer to AD BS.

[-] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

I WOULD pay them not to show ads if they weren't greedy AF.

Give me a family acct. Just youtube, no adds, no music, $15 a month.

Only demand my family members connect from home once every 90 days.

There is NO reason for Youtube to charge as much for their c-rate content than Studios producing actual shows/movies.

[-] osanna@lemmy.vg 3 points 2 weeks ago

while ALSO mining all your data.

[-] Strider@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Capitalism 101: cause a problem. Get paid for the solution.

Also ignore any collateral or conscience.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I watched MST3K recently (a show that clearly denotes when classic network commercials would come on)

They mentioned commercials AFTER YouTube had already shown a 1 minute ad break.

We are late for a competitor.
