Really old scotch. I don't remember the distillery or the sticker price, but I think it was in the neighborhood of $100 / glass. I had it at a fancy party.

Worth $100 / glass? I don't think so, but it was very good. Best scotch I've ever had, not that I'm much of a connoisseur. I get why rich people like it.

There's a fancy grocery store near me, and in the deli, they had acorn-fed organic-raised Iberico Pork charcutery.

It was, I want to say, $160 a pound.

It was my birthday, and getting them to slice it as thin as they could, I bought a tenth of a pound of this $160 a pound Iberico pork.

It was the most delicious thing I'd ever eaten in my entire life.

I shared it with my girlfriend and she almost cried at how good it was.

Celebrated getting a good paying job by going to Sushi Kashiba in Seattle. Nearly $700 for the two of us, about 1/3 of that was fancy saki. It was worth it except for I couldn't eat normal sushi for over a year after because no matter where we went it all tasted cheap in comparison

Corporate customer dinner in Vegas, footed by sales director, who insisted on ordering the most expensive bottle of scotch on the menu.

Two things for different reasons.

I had a meal plan in college that drew from an account linked to my university ID. There were vending machines that could charge your meal plan account when you swiped your ID. I bought a bag of spicy Cheetos, orverdrafted, and had to pay $50.

I cracked my tooth on a lifesaver and had to get a crown for $1000.

12-year old single malt scotch. I bought a bottle as a birthday gift for a friend and we shared a glass.

He decided he didn't like the taste and drank the rest with coke, so obviously next time I'll buy him a bottle of turpentine and a monogramed shot glass.

I can't think of ever buying something very expensive in raw monies, but I did once pay £2 for an olive. An £8 plate for 4 kalamata olives split 4 ways. They were ricotta stuffed and fried. It was exceptionally tasty, but we did not expect such a wild price ratio for an otherwise affordable place.

Someone once treated me to actual Wagyu steak in Japan. It was good but certainly not hundreds of dollars good; marinades are cheap and makes my usual cheap meats taste wonderful.

Which, is not actually really any better than bottom shelf andre brut or cooks and such. Any good wine should be less than $20 a bottle, with exceptions that were brought out for each other course. The name, price, and dick waggling that comes with it is the point. So if you never get the illustrious Dom Perignon, don't fucking worry, just make sure your shit's chilled all the way through before you get to the function.

Never knew raw oysters could actually be good. The presentation and explanation of each dish and subsequent wine pairing was great. Fabulous time, worth it. I think it was something like $700, all told? Bucket list of my partner's, so double points.

SOMETHING ELSE that's super fucking worth it: Taking a cross-country trip on the Amtrak in a sleeper car. It's first class, super bicycle friendly, and included in the ticket price is three full meals a day, with a boozy drink at dinner. Last I checked, it's over a grand from boston to the west coast, but it's like living in steamer trunk for a few days and is just super fucking rad

A glass of 1965 Chateau Cheval Blanc. We were being entertained by friends in their house which had a significant wine cellar. I protested repeatedly that I was not going to appreciate it, but they insisted it was for friends. It was very nice. I normally spend about £15 a bottle on wine, that bottle was worth about a thousand times that.

As an aside, they have a rack with bottles reserved for celebrating some individual's deaths. I'll let you guess who.

Old Pappy bourbon at $189 an ounce. Absolutely not worth it

$300 steak, it was the best steak I've ever had, but not drastically better than a $60 steak.

A long time ago I went to a fancy steak house and ordered one of those $250 whiskey shots they keep in the special cabinets. The experience was kinda neat (they did a whole little presentation of bringing out the bottle, encouraging us to take pictures, etc.), but the whiskey was just fkin whiskey.

Rogue River Blue Cheese, in 2019, the year it won the award for the world's best cheese. My store had it for $149/pound. Was it good? Hell yeah! Worth the money? Let's just say that I could buy 10 times as much blue cheese for 1/10th the price and be happy. (St. Agur would be my choice.)

$100 wine bottle, and $20 small glass of rum: worth it. Caviar: not worth it, it's bland.

I didn't pay for it but Jim Beam bicentennial of some sort. 9k JPY/shot nearly a decade ago. Not worth it for the price, but I didn't pay.

A number of years ago my wife and I ate lunch at Waterside Inn in Bray, UK. We had wine pairings with all our dishes and every aspect of the experience was near perfection. Total bill was around $1500. Worth every penny.

Around $70~80 for the cheapest steak at a medium- to high-end restaurant in Chicago. Worth the experience and I bet most ppl would have loved it, but that's how I found out I don't like steak...

The second most expensive restaurant I've been to (averaging $40~50 per entrée) was legit amazing though

Around 180g of Kobe Sirloin for maybe 150$ in Japan. Not really worth it but it was once in a lifetime.

I paid near $60 for 3 chicken nugget size pieces of Kobe beef from a street vendor in Osaka.

Totally worth it.

I went to an expensive hotel in the off season, and talked to the bartender a lot. He offered me a very expensive scotch at cost, because he knew I'd like it. "At cost" was $360, normally they charged $900 for it.

It was very good. I would have regretted paying $900 for it, but to try it at $360, it was worth it once.

I once went out to dinner and a movie with a then-friend, like many other casual hangouts we had over the years, but this time that person made a pass at me at the end of the evening and I went with it. This started a relationship which turned incredibly toxic and put me through years of domestic abuse. (It was long ago, I'm fine now.)

Whatever the hell we had for dinner that night was probably my most personally-costly meal ever, and I would not describe it as worth it.
