In "The Odyssey" (2026) Elliot Page was cast as a Greek soldier but he is 5'1" and 110Ibs. Matt Damon is 5'10" 185Ibs. People are complaining that Page doesn't resemble the build of a Greek soldier even though the average Greek soldier was 5'4" and 130 Ibs. Page is closer than Matt Damon!

The more I hear from "it needs to be historically accurate" dweebs the more I realize they think "historically accurate" is whatever they've seen from Hollywood before. Guaranteed most of them thought of the movie Troy with Brad Pitt as their "historical" source.

Pitt didn't even dye his hair red! Much less hide as Pyrrah

How can it be historically accurate if it's a myth? The Trojan War is at best legendary, none of these people existed.

[-] Uruanna@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

none of these people existed.

There actually was an Alaksandu (Alexandros = Paris) king of Troy, and an Achaean that the Hittites knew as Attarsiya (possibly Atreus in Greek, who is the father of Agamemnon and Menelaus), and there was a cult of Odysseus in the right region before Homer, so some of these people did exist - but probably didn't participate in a single war. Surely several names were well known in tradition, and Homer simply mixed a bunch of them in a single story.

How dare you! The cyclops was historically accurate!!

I wouldn't mind watching a full movie in a language I don't understand.

I watched Spermagadeon in Norwegian (no subtitles) and seeing the evil sperm do a musical villain speech as they turn into iron man, with no context, is amazing.

That film was absolutely bonkers (in the best way), and I watched it in Norwegian with English subtitles. Even knowing what's going on, it was still trippy.

I love how the film devolves into a musical at the end about the benefits (and necessity!) of abortion. Definitely would have enraged like half of America if it was shown here.

all this drama has done is remind me I’m old at 47. I have no idea who Elliot Page is, but will see the movie and decide if i like it or not anyway.

He played the pregnant lady in Juno.

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Oh Juno! That was a hit when it came out. Cool! Good sountrack, iirc. Thanks!

as for black Helen... Elon needs to consult a map, Africa was always a short boat ride away.

It makes even more sense in the context of the world presented in the myth, where the ocean is enormous and distant lands abound.

You can imagine Africa being more of an archipelago, with the Sahara being part of the endless ocean.

[-] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 8 points 2 days ago

Maps are too clear cut for Elon. He only talks about big amorphous topics so it's harder to see what an absolute spanner he is.

[-] majster@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Don't be obtuse. Sahara was a thing back then as well

[-] uienia@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

North Africa contained some of the most fertile areas in the Mediterranean in ancient times.

[-] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

And you think nobody ever lived there?

[-] Racoonwithbenefits@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Thats because Page is a vegan

To be clear, this is a place for satirical and meta^2^ references. Not really the actual movie details, unless they're truly stupid or have strong meme potential/background. "Oh hai Mark" kind of stuff. Tho sometimes even these can span a good debate.

For maximum funni, include full name of the movie, its release date and all the detail right in the title of the post.

Try to avoid actual shit and other nasty stuff. Mark nsfw when appropriate.
