I'm shocked it isn't the other way around chronologically. Good on Milan

How terrible! Think of all the lost ad revenue!

What's really dumb about Time Square is that the buildings are legally required to have illuminated signs, originally created under the guise of public safety in 1980s to keep the busy area will lit. These days the claim is about the historic look...

woooooooowwww

1985 looks pretty cool in some ways.

It's like Milan was intentionally attempting to create a sight like Times Square.

But then they realised emulating that wasn't a good fit, and leaning into the history they did have was much better.

will someone please think of the shareholders??

[-] VinegarChunks@lemmus.org 12 points 5 days ago

I wonder what Times Square would look like without the ads.

Without the ads, it looks clean, modern, and impressive. It's something to be proud of.

But this...this is depressing. It's just useless noise telling you what to buy. There's no hope in this. Only loss.

It'd be weird and I think the ads are part of the attraction for tourists these days since they're so recognizable on a photo

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Some would like it less, but it's still the hub of the theater district

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 6 points 5 days ago

Milan vs Milan with uBlock

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 15 points 6 days ago

I kind of dig it with all the ads. Like aesthetics wise. Just looks like a plain old building now. Just my opinion though.

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 8 points 5 days ago

It looks like modern internet full of pop ups vs old internet

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 5 days ago

Idk what old internet you were on but mine was way worse than anything I see today, especially with ad block now.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago

Huh I only had pop ups in the old internet, does the internet still have ads?

[-] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yes, but only from big ad distributors that get ad blocked.

I think you may just be enjoying classic logo design.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That's quite possible. If it was covered in those video screen billboards we have today I probably wouldn't like it.

And no one should blame you. Those Technics and JVC hi fi logos? I'm turned on just thinking about them.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

They took the ads off buildings and put them on all your digital devices instead.

[-] MML@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

Unshittification?

[-] UpAndAtThem@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Oof. It's like a nice stately gentleman, with a huge Bass Pro Shops logo tattooed to his forehead. Much better now.

[-] custom_username@reddthat.com 3 points 5 days ago

Probably the only thing that got less ads over time, incredible

[-] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

The architect must have been rolling in their grave.

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago

Obviously ad block makes a difference but if you turn it off of use someone else's computer it's so bad now

[-] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah I always get so used to not having to worry about what I click on that I get very overwhelmed without that luxury
